Republic FC Strengthen Playoff Push with Shutout in Tampa
A 2-0 Road Win Over Tampa Bay Keeps Pressure on Tulsa
Sacramento Republic FC’s five-game road stretch rolled on Saturday night with another statement win, this time a 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium. In humid, testing conditions, the Indomitable Club delivered a professional performance built on defensive resilience, timely goals, and veteran leadership — exactly the formula that has defined their 2025 campaign.
Lopez and Cicerone Deliver the Goods
Rodrigo Lopez broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a strike from distance that deflected past the Rowdies’ keeper for his fourth goal of the year. The chance came after sustained pressure and a clever setup from Russell Cicerone, who collected his fourth assist of the season on the play.
Cicerone wasn’t finished. After Sacramento absorbed Tampa Bay’s second-half surge, the forward sealed the result in stoppage time with his sixth goal of the season. Sebastian Herrera, fresh off the bench, carried the ball forward on the counter and squared it for Cicerone, who calmly tapped in to secure all three points.
“I think it was a very professional performance. We did what we needed to do in a tough place to play. Getting a goal and assist was really nice, but the most important thing is getting the three points.” – Russell Cicerone
Defense and Vitiello Shine Again
Tampa Bay pressed hard after the break, but Sacramento’s back line — bolstered by Rayan Djedje’s four clearances and 94% passing accuracy — held firm. Danny Vitiello was unbeatable between the posts, recording four saves to secure his league-leading 10th clean sheet of the season, and second in as many matches.
“If you look at the stats, we’ve won a lot of balls in our final third. The attackers deserve credit for how well we’ve been defending. And then the last line of defense is Danny [Vitiello]. Defensively, we’re very, very good — and the stats back that up.” – Lee Desmond
Head coach Neill Collins, returning to Tampa Bay where he once patrolled the sidelines, credited his squad’s effort in one of the toughest away venues in the league.
“I don’t think the players could have performed any better in one of the most difficult environments in the USL. I’m so, so pleased we picked up the three points.” – Neill Collins
Playoff Race Heats Up
The victory not only extends Republic FC’s momentum but also tightens the Western Conference race. Earlier in the day, conference leaders FC Tulsa dropped two points in a draw with Birmingham Legion. Sacramento now sits just six points behind Tulsa with a game in hand, keeping the chase for the top seed very much alive.
With eight matches remaining in the regular season — split evenly between home and away — the path forward is demanding but promising. The Indomitable Club’s ability to grind out results away from Sacramento has been a turning point: Republic have lost just once in their last six road fixtures, drawing once and winning four. That resilience has turned what was once seen as a potential weakness into a strength, fueling confidence as the playoff picture sharpens.
The Road Ahead
Back-to-back away wins against New Mexico and Tampa Bay have Sacramento surging at the perfect time. With the Western Conference race tightening and the playoffs looming, the Indomitable Club’s blend of defensive steel and veteran know-how could yet tilt the balance in the closing stretch.
Was it just me or was the passing circa minute 20 the nicest we've seen all season. RoRo was just pinging balls all over and the team was playing so crisp. Lovely offense. His goal was the end result of such positive play....
Then in the second half it was a great three man backline. One of them was always coming forward to cause problems just outside the box. Result was TB having nothing convincing despite a lot of possession in our half.
... and Russ, with the late game full field run seal it with the tap-in, gotta love the effort....
