Republic FC Secures Seattle Sounders Homegrown Cody Baker on Loan
Sacramento Republic FC has strengthened its defensive corps with the addition of 21-year-old Cody Baker, joining on loan from MLS side Seattle Sounders. The move comes at a pivotal point in the season as the Indomitable Club continues its push on two fronts—the USL Championship playoff race and the Jägermeister Cup.
“Cody is coming in at a critical time of our season and will be an important addition to our team as we compete for two trophies,” said Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant.
A Rising Talent from the Pacific Northwest
A Washington native, Baker has been part of the Sounders system since 2018, when he joined the club’s academy. He broke through in 2021 with Tacoma Defiance, Seattle’s then-USL Championship affiliate, and has since amassed nearly 100 professional appearances across MLS and USL competitions.
His first-team debut came in the 2023 U.S. Open Cup, where he also recorded his first professional assist in a wild 5-4 win over San Diego Loyal. That showing earned him a short-term MLS contract, and within weeks, a full homegrown deal with Seattle in May 2023. Known for his versatility across the backline, Baker has tallied one goal and five assists across six professional seasons.
This year, he has featured in Seattle’s matchday squads during their Leagues Cup-winning campaign, gaining valuable experience in a high-pressure tournament environment.
Impact for Sacramento
Baker’s arrival adds both depth and energy to a Republic FC squad that has found consistency on the road and is preparing for a crucial stretch of matches. With his mix of youth, experience, and familiarity with the USL Championship, he should be an immediate option for Head Coach Neill Collins to integrate into the rotation.
Baker will be available for selection on Wednesday night as Sacramento travels to Rhode Island FC in the Jägermeister Cup Semifinals—a match that could put the club within one step of another piece of silverware. His addition highlights the club’s intent to maximize every opportunity as the calendar ticks down on the 2025 season.
