Sacramento Republic FC has made a habit of finding ways to win over the past three months, and Saturday night’s regular-season finale against Oakland Roots SC might have been the most fitting example yet. After surrendering an early lead and entering halftime trailing by a goal, Republic FC delivered another late comeback, scoring twice in the final ten minutes to secure a 3-2 victory at Heart Health Park. The result extended Sacramento’s unbeaten streak to a club-record 13 matches and secured the second seed in the Western Conference, ensuring the club will open its postseason campaign at home.

The stakes were already high entering Saturday’s NorCal rivalry matchup, with Sacramento still fighting for positioning near the top of the Western Conference. By the final whistle, Republic had accomplished what it needed to do, adding another memorable result to a remarkable late-season turnaround. The victory also secured the Hella Cup for the second consecutive year, giving Sacramento another piece of regional bragging rights over Oakland and Monterey Bay.

Republic could hardly have asked for a better start. Just two minutes into the match, Alfredo Midence opened the scoring with his first goal for the club, combining with Memo Rodríguez on a short corner before cutting inside his defender and curling a low shot beyond Oakland goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. The early breakthrough set the tone for an aggressive opening stretch in which Sacramento looked capable of putting the match away before Oakland could settle in.

Midence nearly doubled his tally minutes later when Mayele Malango created an opportunity from the left flank, but McIntosh was able to deny the effort. Sacramento continued creating chances, yet its inability to capitalize on the early momentum eventually proved costly. Oakland found its way back into the contest, with Danny Trejo equalizing in the 45th minute before Peter Wilson struck in first-half stoppage time to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage at the break.

It was a frustrating reversal for a Sacramento side that had controlled much of the early action. Republic’s attacking numbers ultimately reflected a team that created considerably more opportunities than its opponent, finishing with 18 shots to Oakland’s nine, including eight on target. Sacramento also generated 2.40 expected goals compared to Oakland’s 0.82, a significant difference that highlighted both the quality of Republic’s chances and Oakland’s efficiency in front of goal. Sixteen of Sacramento’s 18 attempts came from inside the penalty area, further illustrating how consistently the home side worked its way into dangerous positions.

Following the match, head coach Neill Collins acknowledged both the missed opportunities and the resilience required to recover from them.

❝

“I’m proud of the team. Like really proud of the team. Not just tonight, but if you told me with 13 games to go that we’d go unbeaten, that we’d win the number of games that we’ve done. We’ve won in El Paso. We’ve won in New Mexico. That’s taken a lot of effort. And tonight, I thought for the first 20 minutes we were exhilarating, should have been well ahead, and then we were the victims of our own problems, and we ended up behind at half time. But the character they showed, the fitness levels they showed. We fell a little short of the of the first seed, but we took care of our business tonight, and we showed that we’re very, very hard team to beat at home.”

— Neill Collins, Republic FC Head Coach

The second half became another test of the character Sacramento has developed during its unbeaten run. Despite trailing, Republic continued pushing forward, with Collins turning to his bench in search of a breakthrough. Blake Willey, Mark-Anthony Kaye and Ryan Spaulding entered in the 65th minute, followed by Kyle Edwards in the 72nd and Forster Ajago seven minutes later. Those changes would ultimately play a significant role in deciding the match.

Sacramento finally found its equalizer in the 81st minute through a familiar combination. After Ajago drew a foul near the sideline, Rodríguez delivered a dangerous free kick toward the near post, where captain Lee Desmond rose above the Oakland defense to head home. It was Republic’s second set-piece goal of the evening and another example of the improvement in dead-ball situations that has become an important part of the team’s attacking identity under Collins.

Desmond’s contribution extended beyond the equalizer. The defender finished with eight clearances and six duels won, providing an important defensive presence while helping push Sacramento toward its comeback. His goal also reinforced the value of a set-piece approach that the team has worked to develop throughout the season.

With the score level and time running out, Sacramento could have settled for a point. Instead, the home side continued searching for a winner, and in the 90th minute, Edwards delivered another decisive moment.

Following an Oakland corner, Republic cleared the danger and Willey collected possession before finding Edwards in space. The forward carried the ball into the penalty area, shifted onto his left foot and drove a shot across McIntosh into the far corner. The goal completed Sacramento’s comeback, sent Heart Health Park into celebration and gave Edwards his tenth league goal of the season.

The finish was another remarkable contribution from a player who has become one of Republic’s most reliable late-game threats. Edwards reached double figures despite starting just four of his 28 league appearances, accumulating ten goals in only 771 minutes of action. His ability to change matches from the bench has become an increasingly valuable weapon for Collins, particularly during a stretch in which Sacramento has repeatedly found results in the closing stages.

Willey’s involvement was equally significant. The Sacramento native provided his first assist of the season on the winning goal, rewarding Collins’ decision to introduce him during the second half. It was another example of Republic’s depth making a difference, with substitutes contributing directly to the decisive moments of a match that had appeared to be slipping away.

Following the victory, Willey credited Edwards’ ability to deliver when the team needs him most.

❝

“Yeah, I mean he’s just amazing. Like we always know if we’re not playing good or behind, we know we have him on the bench who can bring a massive spark, and he always finds ways to deliver.”

— Blake Willey, Republic FC Midfielder

While Edwards provided the winning moment, Rodríguez once again played a central role in Sacramento’s attacking success. His two assists brought his total to nine goal contributions over the club’s last six matches, continuing a remarkable run of form at exactly the right time. Rodríguez also finished Saturday’s contest with four shots, four chances created and three successful dribbles, further demonstrating his influence beyond the final pass.

Oakland still had an opportunity to spoil the celebration deep into stoppage time, but Danny Vitiello denied Keegan Tingey’s close-range effort in the 97th minute to preserve the victory. It was a final reminder that Sacramento’s comeback required contributions at both ends of the field, with the goalkeeper making a crucial stop after his teammates had done the work to reclaim the lead.

The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for a Republic side that spent portions of the season searching for consistency. What began as a difficult campaign has developed into one of the strongest stretches of form in the Western Conference, with Sacramento collecting results against some of the league’s toughest opponents and climbing into second place by the final night of the regular season.

There is also something particularly encouraging about the variety of ways Sacramento has found success during this run. The club has won difficult road matches, relied on defensive performances when necessary and increasingly demonstrated the ability to recover from setbacks. Saturday’s comeback combined several of those qualities, with set-piece execution, individual creativity and impactful substitutions all contributing to the result.

The numbers offer additional perspective on just how effective Republic has become. Sacramento finished the regular season with a 13-match unbeaten streak, while Rodríguez’s recent production and Edwards’ scoring efficiency have provided the attacking contributions needed to turn competitive matches into victories. Just as importantly, the team has shown a willingness to continue pressing for results rather than protecting draws, a mentality that could prove valuable in the postseason.

Still, Saturday’s performance was not without warning signs. Conceding twice after such a dominant opening stretch nearly cost Sacramento valuable points, and the defensive lapses that allowed Oakland to overturn the early deficit will need attention before the playoffs. Against stronger postseason opposition, those mistakes could be considerably more difficult to overcome, particularly in a single-elimination format where there is little room for recovery.

Republic now turns its attention to FC Tulsa, which will visit Heart Health Park on Sunday, November 1, for the opening round of the USL Championship Playoffs. Securing the second seed gives Sacramento home-field advantage through the Western Conference semifinals, should the club advance, and provides an opportunity to build on the momentum generated during its unbeaten run.

For Collins and his players, the challenge will be carrying that confidence into a postseason where previous results offer no guarantees. Sacramento has spent the final months of the regular season proving it can compete with the best teams in the conference, but the playoffs will demand that same level of execution under even greater pressure.

Saturday’s victory over Oakland was more than another three points or another rivalry win. It was a reflection of the identity Republic FC has built during its late-season resurgence. The team has become difficult to put away, increasingly dangerous in the final stages of matches and capable of finding contributions throughout its roster.

Thirteen matches without defeat have brought Sacramento to this point, but the club’s ambitions extend well beyond a second-place finish. With a home playoff match awaiting and momentum firmly on its side, Republic FC enters November looking like a team capable of making a serious postseason run.
