Republic FC Opens 2026 With Statement 2–0 Win Over Tulsa
Sacramento Republic FC opened the 2026 USL Championship season Saturday night the way every club hopes to start a new campaign: with three points in front of a sold-out Heart Health Park.
Behind second-half goals from Freddy Kleemann and Kyle Edwards, Republic defeated FC Tulsa 2-0 to claim the club’s 200th win in franchise history. The result also marked Sacramento’s first victory over Tulsa since March of 2022.
The evening began with a moment that reflected the larger conversation surrounding the league. As kickoff arrived, players from both sides stood in place for the opening minute in a show of solidarity amid ongoing collective bargaining negotiations between the league and the United Soccer League Players Association.
When play resumed, the focus turned to the field and what unfolded was a tight, physical opening contest between two teams that finished near the top of the Western Conference last season.
A Cagey First Half
The opening 45 minutes were defined more by tension than by clear chances. Tulsa looked dangerous early, finishing the night with 12 total shots to Sacramento’s 9, but Republic held firm defensively and prevented the visitors from finding a breakthrough.
Sacramento controlled slightly more possession at 52.6%, though both sides struggled to generate high-quality chances in the final third during the early stages of the match.
Republic appeared to have broken the deadlock early in the second half when Forster Ajago slipped past his defender and squared the ball to Arturo Rodriguez, who finished calmly. But referee Greg Dopka called a delayed foul on Ajago in the buildup, wiping away what would have been the opener.
The moment only seemed to raise the intensity inside Heart Health Park.
Kleemann Breaks the Deadlock
Sacramento’s breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute.
Ryan Spaulding created space along the left flank and delivered a looping cross toward the back post. Charging into the space was Freddy Kleemann, who rose above the defense and powered the ball home for his first goal in Old Glory Red.
The defender later reflected on the moment after the match.
“I’m just so excited to be in front of these fans again and I guess it showed,” Kleemann said. “Ryan lofted it up there and I was like, ‘no one is beating me to this ball.’”
The goal shifted momentum decisively in Sacramento’s favor.
Edwards Seals It
As Tulsa pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Republic found the space it needed to put the match away.
In the 83rd minute, Arturo Rodriguez carried the ball through midfield before drawing defenders toward him. Spotting Kyle Edwards breaking into space on the right flank, Rodriguez slid the ball across.
Edwards took one touch before placing a low shot past Alex Tabakis into the bottom corner.
The goal marked a strong debut moment for the forward and continued a remarkable club trend: a Republic debutant has now scored on opening night for seven consecutive seasons.
“It feels awesome being on this side,” Edwards said after the match. “I knew as long as I get a chance, I will score.”
Vitiello Makes History
While the goals grabbed the headlines, goalkeeper Danny Vitiello quietly delivered another milestone performance.
The three-time Goalkeeper of the Year finalist recorded three saves to secure the clean sheet, becoming the first goalkeeper in USL Championship history to reach 59 regular-season shutouts.
His calm presence anchored a Sacramento defense that absorbed Tulsa’s pressure throughout the night.
Collins Praises Team Performance
Head Coach Neill Collins was pleased with the way his side grew into the match against a team that finished first in the Western Conference a season ago.
“To do it the way we did, it’s very pleasing, especially in front of an unbelievable crowd,” Collins said. “Towards the end of the half and after the 60th minute I thought we really took control of the game.”
Collins also credited the growing chemistry within the squad following preseason.
“Nothing builds chemistry like winning games together,” he said.
A Strong Start
For a club entering a season with renewed expectations and several new faces, the result checked many of the early boxes.
Sacramento earned a clean sheet, saw contributions from both returning veterans and new arrivals, and began the campaign with three points against one of the Western Conference’s strongest sides from a year ago.
It was also a reminder of the atmosphere that continues to define soccer in the capital city. The sold-out crowd at Heart Health Park provided the energy throughout the night, helping push the Indomitable Club toward a winning start.
Next up, Republic will travel east for its first road test of the season, taking on Lexington SC next Saturday.
