Sacramento Republic FC took a historic step today, breaking ground on its long-awaited stadium in the city’s Railyards district. The $175 million project, slated to open in 2027, represents a turning point not only for the club but also for the region’s soccer community.
A Long Time Coming
For more than a decade, Republic FC has played at Heart Health Park, a venue originally designed as a temporary home. While the club built its reputation and fan base there—becoming one of the USL Championship’s model organizations—the lack of a permanent, soccer-specific stadium has always been the missing piece.
That chapter is now closing. Pre-construction work is already underway, and full construction is scheduled to begin this fall. Once complete, the new stadium will seat 12,000 fans, with the ability to expand to 15,000 for concerts and community events.
“This club is already recognized as a gold star in the USL,” said Republic FC Vice President of Communications John Jacobs. “Players and fans see Sacramento as special, and now we’re adding a best-in-class stadium to match that experience.”

Built for Today, Designed for Tomorrow
The Railyards stadium is more than just a new home. It’s being designed with flexibility in mind. While the initial build will feature 12,000 seats, future expansion could push capacity to 20,000, along with the addition of a roof. That type of growth carries significant implications as the USL moves toward its new Division One league, which will introduce promotion and relegation for the first time in American professional soccer.
A stadium of that scale would not only solidify Republic FC’s standing as a top-tier club in USL but also position Sacramento to host major matches, tournaments, and international friendlies. It underscores the city’s ambition to remain at the forefront of American soccer’s evolving landscape.
A Cultural Anchor
Beyond soccer, the stadium is expected to become a hub for Sacramento’s cultural life. Concerts, festivals, and community events will bring thousands downtown, generating both economic and social impact. While broader Railyards development has been slowed by debates over affordable housing, city officials and club leadership emphasized that stadium construction remains on track and unaffected.
Symbolism in the Date
The groundbreaking ceremony also held deep symbolic meaning for Republic FC’s majority owners, Wilton Rancheria. On August 18, 1958, the California Rancheria Termination Act stripped the tribe and 40 others of federal recognition. Holding the groundbreaking on August 18, 2025—67 years later—was a deliberate choice, signaling reclamation of land and identity.
Looking Ahead
In 2027, Republic FC will step into a home built not only for today’s fans but for future generations. After years of waiting, Sacramento soccer will finally have a permanent stage that reflects the passion of its supporters, the ambition of its club, and the growing prestige of the USL.
And as the league’s structure evolves, the stadium’s potential to grow to 20,000 seats could ensure Republic FC isn’t just keeping up—it’s leading the way.
Until I'm sitting in my seat watching the season opener in that new stadium, Lucy is still holding that damn football!
