The opening round of the 2026 USL Championship Playoffs delivered exactly what makes knockout soccer so unpredictable. The Players' Shield winners are gone, two clubs celebrated their first postseason victories, and several favorites needed late heroics just to survive. Now, eight teams remain, with four places in the Conference Finals up for grabs.

Saturday's Conference Semifinals present four very different matchups. In the East, the underdogs are threatening to dismantle the bracket entirely. Out West, the remaining contenders are separated by narrow margins, familiar rivalries, and a growing sense that one decisive moment could determine everything.

Eastern Conference

Louisville City FC (4) vs. Miami FC (8)

Saturday, November 7 | 7:00 PM ET | Lynn Family Stadium

Miami FC has already authored the biggest surprise of the postseason, eliminating top-seeded Tampa Bay Rowdies in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw. Goalkeeper Eloy Room delivered the decisive save, sending Miami into the Conference Semifinals for the first time in club history. The eighth seed now travels to Louisville, where another victory would turn an unlikely playoff run into one of the season's defining stories.

Louisville, meanwhile, is finding its rhythm at the right time. Under interim head coach Simon Bird, LouCity captured the USL Cup and entered the playoffs on its longest unbeaten run of the season. Tola Showunmi's extra-time winner against defending champion Pittsburgh extended that momentum. The two sides split their regular-season meetings, including a wild 4-3 Miami victory in May, but Louisville has historically dominated this fixture at home. For Miami, the challenge will be surviving Louisville's pressure without spending another 120 minutes defending. For LouCity, the danger is allowing an underdog with nothing to lose to remain within striking distance.

Charleston Battery (2) vs. Hartford Athletic (6)

Saturday, November 7 | 7:30 PM ET | Patriots Point

Charleston survived what was nearly another postseason nightmare against Rhode Island FC. Trailing deep into stoppage time, Miguel Berry's 94th-minute equalizer rescued the Battery before a penalty shootout victory finally ended their recent playoff struggles against Rhode Island. With Tampa Bay eliminated, Charleston now holds home-field priority for the remainder of the postseason, making Patriots Point an increasingly valuable advantage.

Hartford, however, presents a genuine threat. Athletic dispatched third-seeded Detroit City FC 2-1 behind two goals from Sadat Anaku, earning the club's first USL Championship playoff victory. More importantly, Charleston failed to defeat Hartford in either regular-season meeting, losing 2-1 in September and drawing 1-1 in October. Goalkeeper Antony Siaha, who recorded 104 saves during the regular season, provides Hartford with another reason to believe. Charleston's attacking quality and outstanding home record make the Battery favorites, but Hartford has already demonstrated it can frustrate this opponent. The battle between Charleston's attacking pressure and Hartford's defensive organization could ultimately decide the East's most intriguing tactical contest.

Western Conference

New Mexico United (1) vs. Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (5)

Saturday, November 7 | 9:30 PM ET | Isotopes Park

New Mexico United made a convincing opening statement, defeating Phoenix Rising 2-0 behind goals from Greg Hurst and Jake LaCava. The Western Conference's top seed has positioned itself for another deep postseason run, with Hurst's attacking production and the club's formidable home environment providing a strong foundation. Having reached the Western Conference Final last season, United now has an opportunity to take another step toward its first league championship.

Colorado Springs arrives with championship experience of its own. The 2024 title winners survived Lexington SC in a penalty shootout, with Christian Herrera delivering the decisive save after Khori Bennett's equalizer forced the contest beyond regulation. Yet history is firmly against the Switchbacks, who have failed to win in 10 previous visits to New Mexico. United also won both home meetings between the clubs this season. Colorado Springs has the personnel and postseason experience to challenge anyone, but breaking its Albuquerque curse will require a disciplined performance against a New Mexico side that has repeatedly found ways to win this matchup.

Sacramento Republic FC (2) vs. El Paso Locomotive FC (3)

Saturday, November 7 | 10:00 PM ET | Heart Health Park

Sacramento Republic FC enters the Conference Semifinals as one of the Championship's hottest teams, riding a 14-match unbeaten streak after eliminating defending Western Conference champion FC Tulsa. The breakthrough came from 19-year-old academy product Blake Willey, whose late goal delivered a 1-0 victory. Sacramento's defensive consistency has been central to its resurgence, with the club conceding a Western Conference-low 28 goals during the regular season. Combined with Memo Rodríguez's creativity and Kyle Edwards' late-game impact, Republic has developed a knack for producing decisive moments when matches appear destined for stalemates.

El Paso, though, finished just one point behind Sacramento and has plenty of reasons for confidence. Locomotive secured its first playoff victory since 2020 by defeating San Antonio FC 2-1, with Rubio Rubín and Tony Alfaro finding the net. Saturday's matchup also serves as a rubber match after the teams split their regular-season meetings, El Paso winning 2-1 in March before Sacramento claimed a 1-0 road victory in October. The visitors have the attacking quality to challenge Republic's back line, while Sacramento will need to avoid allowing another tight contest to hinge entirely on a late winner. With so little separating these clubs over 30 regular-season matches, this could be the weekend's most finely balanced encounter.

Four Games, Four Tickets to the Conference Finals

The Eastern Conference has already lost its top seed and defending champion, opening the door for an unexpected finalist. Charleston and Louisville still have the advantage of home field, but Miami and Hartford have made it clear that regular-season standings mean little once the playoffs begin.

The West presents a different picture. Its top two seeds remain standing, but Colorado Springs brings recent championship experience, while El Paso has already proven capable of beating Sacramento. By Saturday night, the field will be cut in half, and four teams will move one victory away from the November 21 USL Championship Final.

The bracket has already been shaken. There's little reason to believe the chaos is finished.
