Match Preview: Republic FC vs FC Tulsa
USL Championship | Matchday 1 | Saturday, March 7, 2026
A New Season Begins in Sacramento
Sacramento Republic FC begin their 2026 USL Championship campaign Saturday night at Heart Health Park against reigning Western Conference champions FC Tulsa. The matchup pits two of the West’s top teams from last season against each other immediately, with Tulsa finishing first with 57 points while Sacramento followed closely behind in second with 48.
Both sides enter the year with something to prove. Tulsa is looking to show that its breakthrough 2025 season was no fluke after reaching the USL Championship Final, while Sacramento enters the new campaign with renewed expectations after falling short of a title despite one of the league’s strongest squads.
For Republic, the season opener offers a chance to immediately test a revamped roster against one of the conference’s toughest opponents.
A Rebuilt Republic Attack
Sacramento’s offseason was defined by change, particularly in attack. The club added multiple new forwards, including Forster Ajago, Mayele Malango, and Kyle Edwards, each of whom led their previous teams in scoring last season.
Behind them, the midfield also saw a major overhaul. MLS veterans Mark-Anthony Kaye and Memo Rodriguez arrive with nearly 300 top-flight appearances combined, joining experienced USL players Danny Crisostomo and Arturo Rodriguez to reshape the center of the pitch.
The club retains the defensive core that anchored one of the best backlines in the Western Conference last year, led by goalkeeper Danny Vitiello and captain Lee Desmond. With a new attacking identity forming in front of that foundation, Saturday will offer the first real glimpse of how the pieces fit together.
Tulsa Looking to Build on Historic 2025
FC Tulsa enters the season following the most successful campaign in club history. The Scissortails finished atop the Western Conference standings and advanced to the USL Championship Final, setting several club records along the way.
However, the roster that accomplished that run has changed. Leading scorer Taylor Calheira departed for MLS side Sporting Kansas City, while several new players were brought in to help fill the gap, including MLS NEXT Pro Golden Boot winner Rémi Cabral and forward Nelson Pierre.
Tulsa also added veteran goalkeeper Alex Tambakis, who enters the season tied with Sacramento’s Danny Vitiello for the USL Championship’s all-time regular season clean sheet record.
Despite the changes, the club still retains key contributors such as Lamar Batista and Stefan Lukic from last season’s squad.
Early Statement Opportunity
There is also recent history between these two sides. Tulsa was the only club to defeat Sacramento twice during the 2025 regular season, winning both meetings 1–0.
That makes Saturday’s opener more than just the start of a new campaign. For Sacramento, it is an immediate opportunity to measure the impact of its offseason rebuild against the team that set the standard in the West last year.
With a new-look squad and a strong home crowd expected at Heart Health Park, Republic will look to begin the season by turning the page on last year’s results.
