Republic FC have announced that homegrown defender Chibuike “Chibi” Ukaegbu has been transferred to Houston Dynamo, where he will join Houston Dynamo II in MLS NEXT Pro pending league and federation approval. While financial terms were not disclosed, Republic FC confirmed the deal is the largest transfer in club history.
For Republic FC, this move is about more than losing one of its brightest young talents. It is another example of Sacramento producing players capable of reaching the next level while reinforcing the club’s reputation as one of the top development environments in American soccer.
Ukaegbu joined Republic FC’s academy in 2021 after playing for Placer United and quickly emerged as one of the club’s top prospects. After helping both the U15 and U17 teams reach the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs, he signed his first professional contract with his hometown club in November 2023.
He made his first-team debut at just 17 years old in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup against Monterey Bay FC, immediately making an impact by leading all players in tackles won and duels won. He would later feature in Sacramento’s dramatic Open Cup victory over the San Jose Earthquakes, announcing himself as another academy player ready for the professional stage.
Since then, Ukaegbu has made 47 appearances, including 22 starts, while logging nearly 2,500 minutes across all competitions. He played a role in 20 clean sheets and helped Republic FC reach two USL Championship Playoffs, three consecutive U.S. Open Cup Round of 32 appearances, the 2024 Quarterfinals, and the 2025 USL Cup Final.
His performances have also earned national recognition. Since 2024, Ukaegbu has received six call-ups to United States Youth National Team camps, including appearances with the U-19 and U-20 squads, cementing his status as one of the USL Championship’s top young defenders.
The transfer also represents an important milestone for the club. As transfer fees become an increasingly valuable part of the professional game, Republic FC’s record sale is another sign that its academy is producing players who are attracting attention from higher levels.
“I hope more kids across the region see this moment and understand that the path to the top doesn’t skip places like Sacramento—it runs right through this club.”
That message may be the biggest takeaway from this transfer.
Since launching its academy in 2015, Republic FC has seen more than 30 players sign professional contracts, eight of them with Sacramento itself, while over 100 academy graduates have continued to Division I programs.
Ukaegbu’s departure leaves a talented young defender to replace, but it also serves as another reminder that Republic FC’s academy is doing exactly what it was built to do: develop local talent capable of reaching the next level while proving that Sacramento has become one of the country’s true youth-to-pro soccer pathways.
