The 2026 USL League One Playoffs opened with a weekend that delivered just about everything the postseason promises. A seventh seed knocked out one of the league’s strongest clubs, the regular-season champions made another emphatic statement, and an expansion side continued its remarkable inaugural campaign. Four teams remain, and the road to the League One Final is beginning to take shape.

Chattanooga Delivers the Weekend’s Biggest Upset

The biggest surprise came Friday night in Nebraska, where seventh-seeded Chattanooga Red Wolves SC eliminated No. 2 Union Omaha following a 1-1 draw and a 5-4 penalty shootout victory. Pedro Hernandez stunned the home crowd with a goal just 31 seconds into the match, forcing Omaha to chase the game almost immediately.

The Owls dominated possession and eventually equalized through Diego Gutiérrez in the 66th minute, but Chattanooga's defensive resilience carried the visitors through extra time. Goalkeeper Ricardo Jérez became the hero, making a critical shootout save before converting a penalty himself. Omaha's Younes Boudadi then failed to convert the decisive attempt, sending the Red Wolves into the semifinals.

For Omaha, a 19-win regular season ended without a playoff victory. Chattanooga, meanwhile, provided another reminder that regular-season position offers little protection once elimination soccer begins.

Charlotte Shows Why It Finished on Top

If Chattanooga delivered the shock, Charlotte Independence delivered the statement. The Players' Shield winners dismantled eighth-seeded FC Naples 5-1 on Sunday, extending a season that has already rewritten the League One record books.

Charlotte entered the postseason having established league records with 20 victories, 66 points, and 74 goals. Against Naples, the Independence demonstrated that their attack extends well beyond their biggest names. Christopher Jaime contributed a goal and two assists, while substitute Stéfano Pinho struck twice in the second half.

Remarkably, Charlotte scored five despite Golden Boot winner Souaibou Marou missing a penalty and Golden Playmaker Jon Bakero failing to register an assist. Naples arrived riding six consecutive victories, but the gap between the eighth seed and the regular-season leaders proved substantial. Charlotte now moves within two victories of completing a historic campaign.

Boise's Dream Debut Continues

Athletic Club Boise's inaugural League One season is becoming one of the league's most compelling stories. The third-seeded expansion club eliminated defending champion One Knoxville SC with a convincing 2-0 home victory, advancing to the semifinals in its first attempt.

Nick Moon supplied both assists, setting up Tumi Moshobane in the 37th minute before helping Jesús Barea seal the result in stoppage time. Boise controlled much of the first half and limited Knoxville to just two shots on target throughout the evening.

For Knoxville, the defeat ended its hopes of becoming the first club to repeat as League One champion since Union Omaha's back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. Boise, meanwhile, has already exceeded what many would expect from a first-year club, and now has an opportunity to turn an impressive debut into a championship appearance.

Madison Starts Fast and Holds Firm

Forward Madison FC secured its semifinal place with a 2-1 win over Spokane Velocity FC, taking advantage of a chaotic opening 12 minutes at Breese Stevens Field.

Hakim Karamoko opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Spokane's Lucky Opara equalized four minutes later. Josh Bolma quickly restored Madison's advantage, with Ryan Carmichael providing assists on both Madison goals. From there, the Flamingos relied on disciplined defending to protect their narrow lead.

Spokane pushed for an equalizer but managed just one shot on target across the match. Madison's ability to manage the game after its explosive opening proved decisive, although its next opponent will present an entirely different challenge.

Four Remain, With Two Very Different Paths to the Final

The semifinals now offer two intriguing matchups. Charlotte will host Forward Madison on November 8, pairing the league's most prolific attack against a team that has demonstrated its ability to defend a lead under postseason pressure.

On the other side, Athletic Club Boise hosts Chattanooga on November 7. Boise's attacking quality and home-field advantage will be tested by a Red Wolves side that has already eliminated one of the league's top seeds.

Charlotte remains the standard against which the remaining contenders will be measured, but Chattanooga's upset, Madison's composure, and Boise's remarkable first season have ensured that nothing about the final four feels predetermined. The opening weekend established the contenders. The semifinals will determine which two get the opportunity to play for the title.
