With the regular season entering its final stretch, the USL Championship playoff picture is starting to take shape in the East while becoming increasingly difficult to untangle in the West.
Tampa Bay has officially secured a home playoff match, Charleston continues to strengthen its position behind the Rowdies, and the race around the Eastern Conference playoff line remains alive. Out West, Sacramento and Lexington made two of the biggest moves of the weekend, while El Paso finally saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end.
Eastern Conference
Tampa Bay didn’t need a win in San Antonio to accomplish something important. A 0-0 draw was enough for the Rowdies to clinch a top-four finish, guaranteeing they’ll open the postseason at home. Tampa Bay sits atop the East with 52 points and has built a six-point advantage over Charleston.
The Battery took another significant step toward securing a home playoff match of their own with a 2-0 win over Rhode Island. Emilio Ycaza scored twice late to break open what had been a scoreless match, pushing Charleston to 46 points and further separating the top two from the rest of the conference.
Rhode Island’s loss also made the bottom of the playoff picture considerably more interesting. Miami went on the road and beat Indy Eleven 2-0, moving to 30 points and within two of eighth-place Rhode Island. Rhode Island has two games in hand, but Miami has at least created some genuine pressure around a playoff line that recently looked more settled.
Hartford remains one of the East’s most interesting late-season teams. Athletic’s 2-2 draw with Louisville extended its unbeaten run to 11 matches and kept Hartford fourth in the conference. The result also maintained a two-point advantage over Louisville in the race for a top-four seed, with the two clubs now preparing to meet again in the USL Cup Final.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, missed an opportunity to strengthen its own position. A 90th-minute Yaniv Bazini goal handed the Riverhounds a 1-0 loss at Orange County, their second consecutive defeat. Pittsburgh remains fifth, but with Hartford, Pittsburgh and Louisville separated by only two points, the race for the final home playoff position remains wide open.
The East is developing some separation at the top, but there is still plenty left to decide underneath Tampa Bay and Charleston. The battle for home-field advantage remains tight, and Miami has done enough over the past two weeks to keep Rhode Island looking over its shoulder.
Western Conference
There is considerably less separation in the West.
El Paso’s eight-game winning streak finally ended with a 1-1 draw against Tulsa, but Locomotive remains atop the conference with 47 points. New Mexico follows on 43, while Sacramento and Lexington both sit on 40. Orange County and Colorado Springs are only another point behind, with Tulsa and San Antonio sitting on 38.
That congestion made Sacramento’s 3-2 road win over New Mexico one of the most consequential results of the weekend.
Memo Rodríguez led Republic with two goals and an assist, while Kyle Edwards added Sacramento’s third. The victory extended Republic’s unbeaten streak to eight matches and moved Sacramento into third place in the current Western Conference table, only three points behind New Mexico.
After spending much of the summer around the middle of the playoff race, Sacramento has turned that unbeaten run into meaningful movement. Republic is now fighting for positioning near the top of the West rather than simply trying to stay above the postseason line.
Lexington’s climb has been just as dramatic. A 3-2 comeback win at Monterey Bay pushed Lexington to 40 points as Phillip Goodrum and Marcus Epps struck late. Goodrum scored again after producing consecutive hat tricks in his previous two matches, continuing one of the hottest individual stretches in the Championship.
Orange County also picked up three badly needed points. After seven matches without a victory, OCSC beat Pittsburgh 1-0 on Bazini’s late winner. That moved Orange County to 39 points and kept the club firmly in the fight for a top-four finish rather than allowing its recent slide to drag it toward the playoff line.
Oakland isn’t finished either. Roots produced a 3-0 win over Phoenix to move to 33 points, keeping themselves within reach of the postseason places. With the Championship sending the top eight teams from each conference into the playoffs, the margin between fighting for a home match and fighting simply to qualify remains remarkably small in the West.
El Paso still has the advantage at the top, but there is little room for comfort underneath them. New Mexico, Sacramento, Lexington, Orange County, Colorado Springs, Tulsa and San Antonio are separated by only five points.
The East is beginning to establish its hierarchy. The West is heading into October with almost everything still up for grabs.
