The 2026 USL Championship regular season concluded Saturday with a dramatic final day that delivered late winners, shifting seeds, and heartbreak for clubs fighting to extend their seasons. New Mexico United claimed the Western Conference’s top seed with a stoppage-time victory over El Paso, while Sacramento Republic completed a comeback against Oakland to finish second. In the East, Charleston secured the second seed, Tampa Bay closed out its Players’ Shield-winning campaign with another victory, and Indy Eleven’s postseason hopes came to an end.

With all 16 playoff places now determined, attention turns to the single-elimination postseason beginning October 30. Several clubs enter with considerable momentum, while others will need to recover quickly from disappointing finishes to the regular season.

Eastern Conference

Tampa Bay Rowdies closed out their Players’ Shield-winning campaign with a 2-0 victory over Sporting Jacksonville, finishing the regular season on 61 points. The Rowdies enter the playoffs as the Championship’s most consistent team, but their opening-round matchup against eighth-seeded Miami FC carries some intrigue. Miami defeated Tampa Bay 2-1 earlier this month, demonstrating that even the league’s top side is vulnerable.

Behind Tampa Bay, Charleston Battery secured second place with a 1-0 victory over Indy Eleven. Colton Swan scored the winner in the 78th minute, ending Indy’s postseason hopes and securing a home playoff match against Rhode Island. Miami advances with 36 points, while Indy finishes ninth on 34 after entering the weekend needing a victory to qualify.

Detroit City and Louisville City played to a scoreless draw, leaving Detroit third on 51 points and Louisville fourth on 47. Louisville had already secured its top-four finish with a midweek victory over Sporting Jacksonville, and its recent improvement, combined with the club’s USL Cup triumph, makes it an intriguing postseason contender.

Louisville will host defending champions Pittsburgh Riverhounds, who finished fifth on 45 points following a 2-1 victory over Birmingham Legion. The matchup brings together two clubs with considerable postseason experience and could be one of the opening round’s most competitive fixtures.

Hartford Athletic climbed to sixth with a 2-1 comeback victory over regional rival Rhode Island. Emmanuel Samadia recorded a goal and an assist as Hartford moved to 43 points, sending the club to Detroit for its playoff opener. Rhode Island finishes seventh and will travel to Charleston, with both clubs facing difficult opening-round assignments.

The East enters the postseason with Tampa Bay as the clear favorite based on regular-season form, but the competition behind the Rowdies remains difficult to separate. Charleston and Detroit have built strong campaigns around defensive consistency, while Louisville enters with renewed confidence. Miami’s presence as the eighth seed also provides an early reminder that regular-season standings don’t always translate into straightforward postseason results.

Western Conference

The Western Conference saved its biggest moment for the final minutes of the regular season. New Mexico United traveled to El Paso knowing a victory would secure the conference’s top seed, but the Derby del Camino Real appeared headed toward a scoreless draw until Valentin Noël scored from distance in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The 1-0 victory moved New Mexico to 52 points, securing the conference’s top seed and home-field advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs. For El Paso, the defeat completed a costly final stretch, with consecutive home losses to Sacramento and New Mexico dropping Locomotive to third on 50 points after leading the conference entering the final two weekends.

Sacramento Republic delivered another dramatic result to secure second place, defeating Oakland Roots 3-2 at a sold-out Heart Health Park. After taking an early lead through Alfredo Midence, Republic conceded twice before halftime and needed late goals from Lee Desmond and Kyle Edwards to complete the comeback.

The victory extended Sacramento’s club-record unbeaten streak to 13 matches and moved Republic to 51 points, just one behind New Mexico. After entering September outside the top four, Sacramento finishes second and will host FC Tulsa in the opening round. For Oakland, the defeat ended its postseason hopes after a late push to reach the playoff field.

Lexington SC finished fourth on 48 points after a dramatic 3-3 draw at Phoenix Rising. Lexington rallied from a 3-1 deficit to secure a point and will host its first Championship playoff match, while Phoenix secured the final Western Conference postseason berth.

Rising finishes eighth on 40 points and will travel to New Mexico for the opening round. Ihsan Sacko also claimed the Championship’s Golden Boot with 17 goals, providing Phoenix with a dangerous attacking threat heading into a difficult road matchup.

San Antonio secured its postseason place with a 2-1 victory over Orange County, finishing sixth on 45 points and eliminating OCSC from contention. Colorado Springs also closed strongly with a 2-0 victory over Tulsa, finishing fifth on 47 points and extending its unbeaten run to seven matches.

The West’s final standings reflect just how competitive the conference has been throughout the season. Only five points separate first-place New Mexico from fourth-place Lexington, while Sacramento’s remarkable late-season form has transformed Republic from a team fighting for positioning into a legitimate conference title contender.

The regular season has delivered two very different conference champions. Tampa Bay established control of the East through consistency, while New Mexico needed a dramatic final-day winner to emerge from a Western Conference race that remained unsettled until the final whistle.

Both will enter the postseason with home-field advantage, but neither has an easy route to the Championship Final. Louisville, Charleston and Detroit provide considerable competition in the East, while Sacramento’s unbeaten run and Lexington’s attacking production make the West particularly unpredictable.

After 30 regular-season matches, the margins separating the Championship’s contenders have become increasingly small. The playoff field is set, the seeding is settled, and the next four weeks will determine which clubs can turn regular-season success into a championship.
