The Lineup:

Over the last several years, Republic has had the propensity to play to the level of their opponent, both up and down. To everyone’s frustration, we’ve already seen it twice this season. On one hand, Republic held MLS side Minnesota United and star goal scorer James Rodriguez to a scoreless draw over 120 minutes just 2 weeks ago. A month before that, Republic needed 120 minutes to beat amateur side El Farolito.

This is not an unfamiliar pattern; even within just the USL-C, Republic have played down to the opponents level in recent memory. Through last season, Monterey Bay has won exactly 1 game in their last 20 matches - a 1-0 win against Republic last September. That same Monterey team has just 2 draws and 3 goals this season, including a 1-1 draw with Republic in Sacramento.

So it was fantastic to see Republic break out of that habit with aplomb. A 4-0 drubbing of a very good USL-1 side in Spokane Velocity showed a side of Republic that not only refused to lower their level of play to the level of USL-1, but endeavored to show the gap in quality between the two sides. We’ve seen Republic go up by 1 or 2 goals in the past, and pump the breaks. Not tonight - the 4 goals were evenly spread throughout the game. Republic refused to be content to sit back and see the game out.

Two returning players, a debut goal, and 2 breakout midfielders help of course. Republic seriously needed the moral boost - let’s take a look at how they did it.

The Good:

The Return of Jack Gurr and Memo Rodriguez
A huge positive for Republic in this match was the continued return of Republic players from the injury list. While players such as MAK, Reedy, Crisostomo, and Timmer remain out, Republic is slowly building strength as we head into the summer.

Memo’s injury seemed to be less severe than a few of the others; he only missed a month, and made his return in the 59th minute. With just 30 minutes to impact the game, Memo stepped up with 3 shots, 1 of which was on target and one hit the post, and went 3/3 in duals. Republic has struggled with midfield control, and Memo returning helps solidify that control.

Making his first start of the season, and second appearance, is Jack Gurr, whom Republic have desperately needed. Gurr is not just the best right back on the roster - he’s the best right back in the entire Championship. We’ll discuss how Republic has started to prefer to play on the wings below, but what the return of Gurr does is that it makes Republic a threat on both sides of the pitch. Compare where Republic attack against Minnesota (no Gurr), with how they attack against Spokane (with Gurr):

Against Minnesota, it’s heavily skewed to the left side of the pitch. Add in Jack Gurr, and all of a sudden Republic is a threat on both sides of the pitch.

Wing Play
Speaking of playing on the wings, let’s get into that a bit. Republic has started heavily attacking up both wings, which is what we expected a bit more at the start of the season. I think the injuries have delayed that plan from coming in - what we’ve been seeing is Republic relying on the left side of the pitch. Look at how the defenders move in this image from the match against Phoenix a few weeks ago:

That is the right back and both center backs staying in the back line, which in turn has freed up Benitez to push all the way up the field from the left back role. The attack becomes one dimensional though; opposing teams know where the attack is coming from, and can plan for it. What Republic want to do is something more like what we saw against Lexington:

There’s still three at the back while Republic have the ball, but it is Crisostomo in this case who drops into the backline from the CDM role, allowing both the left back and right back to surge forward up the wings.

With the absences of Gurr and Crisostomo, there just hasn’t been the personnel to utilize this tactic. With Gurr back, look where Benitez (left) and Gurr (right) played against Spokane:

They are both pushed way up the field. On the right side of the pitch, that’s the furthest upfield a Republic right back has averaged all season. But with Crisostomo out, how did Republic fill the defense gaps? They used both CDM’s: Willey (left) and Essel (right):

Both drop in and back fairly often throughout the game, almost to the sideline, because they are covering for both wing backs going up pitch. We’ll have to see if this adjusts to just Crisostomo dropping when he and MAK return from injury, but this is a great sign that Republic is getting their offensive verticality back without losing their defensive structure.

Another factor of this wing play is how it affects Republic’s strikers. You may remember Quail City’s 2026 predictions:

Noticeably absent from the predicted “Golden Quail Award” for top striker is Forster Ajago, Republic’s main striker, and we’re starting to see why. It’s not because Ajago is a bad player - quite the opposite! He’s a fast and strong player, which means he’s very good at 1, getting assists, and 2, secretly drawing attention. Look at Republic’s third goal on the night, which was scored by Malango and assisted by Arturo:

Ajago actually makes this goal off the ball. It’s a little hard to see, but follow him (number 11) as he runs to the near post. He pulls both opposing center backs with him, which is what leaves Malango wide open. Because Republic are attacking from the sides much more often, keep an eye out for this type of play from both Ajago and Edwards going forward - it doesn’t make the stat sheet, but damn, it should be recognized somewhere.

The goal scorers in this system are going to be the wingers - all 4 of Republic’s goals came from outside players. Benitez scored while roaming up from left back, Malango scored his brace from the left wing, and Wolff scored his debut goal from the right wing.

Breakouts and Debuts
Speaking of Wolff, Republic’s newest signing made his club debut after just a few days of training, and scored just 5 minutes in. That’s the sort of drive and eye for goal that Republic needs. Collins seemed ecstatic about his new signing:

“He showed in his first goal and his first action why we brought him to the club. He’s dynamic, and he’s got an eye for goals, and I think every team needs that.”

The other interesting thing to note with Wolff’s debut is where Arturo played. Arturo, who has predominantly played the right wing role that Wolff sits in, was played at what seems to be a “False 9 “role. The False 9, similar to a center attacking midfielder or CAM, is supposed to be your central offensive focal point, dropping in to the midfield to collect the ball before pinging out passes to the wings to open the opposing defense up. Until his injury, this was Memo Rodriguez’s main role - it’s also a bit similar to where Roro has played in the past, though Roro often sat back in the midfield just a tad further.

But Arturo, over the past 3 games, has suddenly taken control of the position. His 2 assists tonight are exactly what you want from this spot on the pitch, especially in a system that so heavily emphasizes the outside of the pitch rather than the center. It will be very interesting to see how Collins handles this role as players return from injury.

Malango also broke out, with a brace from the bench. Malango is one of the players who I think can show the most growth this season - the talent is all there, he just needs to keep adding the finishing touches. A 2 goal night is a great way to build that confidence.

The Bad:

Further Injuries?
Republic, while slowly getting healthy, just can’t seem to kick the injury bug. Currently hurt are:

• Jared Timmer

• Pierre Reedy

• Danny Crisostomo

• Mark-Anthony Kaye

Those are all key players. And while Gurr and Memo are now back on the pitch, their minutes are still limited - Gurr subbed out after 60 minutes on the dot, and Memo subbed in for just 30 minutes.

Further worrying is the substitutions of Freddy Kleemann and Dominik Wanner - Kleemann’s seemed less serious, but Wanner subbed out after just 39 minutes. Either player missing some time will just cause further issues, especially on the backline. We haven’t heard any updates on any of these injuries, let alone return time-lines, given Republic’s usual habit of being tight-lipped. But the sooner these guys are back, the better.

What Stood Out:

Overall, a great night for the club. Every other team in Republic’s USL Cup group dropped points - which is huge in a tournament where only the group winner advances. 4-0, at home in front of the fans, is a huge result. Collins had this to say:

“It was great to see a score, four goals in front of our home crowd. I think we could have scored a few more. At home, we want to create, we want to score and if that means, at times to be a little looser, that’s fine… credit to the boys for a great result.”

With the first USL Cup match game of the season complete, Republic now move back into league play, where they’ll host Orange County in a big show down - OC needs the points to hang on to first, and Republic desperately needs to move up the table.

Something to watch for is how Collins handle the return of all these injured players. He almost has too many options now in the midfield, with how well Arturo, Essel, and Willey have been playing. Crisostomo, Memo, and MAK returning makes for a very crowded midfield, not to mention new comers like Wolff. We may also see some position shake ups - you’ll note that Memo came in for Wolff and played on the wing instead of playing in the center, which left Arturo playing at the False 9 we discussed earlier. And I’m very curious to see where Pierre Reedy comes in when he’s healthy - Wanner has cemented himself as a solid left winger to go along with Malango.

Either way, the Quails are getting healthy again and the depth is returning. It’s time for a push in the standings.

Republic FC began its 2026 USL Cup run with a performance that was as complete as it was convincing, defeating Spokane Velocity FC 4-0 at Heart Health Park. From the opening minutes, Republic dictated the pace, found space in attacking areas, and controlled the match on both sides of the ball.

The result pushes Sacramento to the top of Group 1 and, more importantly, offers a clearer picture of how this roster is beginning to take shape as new additions settle in and returning players rejoin the fold.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Republic didn’t ease into the match. They imposed themselves immediately.

In the fifth minute, Tyler Wolff made an instant impact in his club debut. After a quick sequence starting from a clearance, Arturo Rodriguez delivered a precise through ball that split Spokane’s defense. Wolff broke free, calmly beating his defender before finishing into the lower corner to give Sacramento an early lead.

The sequence showcased exactly what Sacramento hoped to gain from the Real Salt Lake loanee, direct movement, confidence in front of goal, and the ability to turn a moment into something decisive.

Wolff’s presence remained noticeable throughout the half, nearly adding an assist later on as Republic continued to push numbers forward and stretch Spokane’s back line.

Malango Finds His Form

While the opening goal established control, the match shifted firmly in Sacramento’s favor just before halftime.

After weathering Spokane’s best chance, a close-range opportunity denied by Danny Vitiello, Republic struck again in transition. Forster Ajago played a key role in the buildup, releasing Mayele Malango down the left. The forward carried the ball into the box and finished with composure, doubling the lead heading into the break.

The second half brought more of the same, with Sacramento continuing to find space between lines and exploit Spokane’s defensive gaps. In the 56th minute, Rodriguez once again influenced the attack, delivering a cross that, combined with Ajago’s movement, created just enough separation for Malango to control and finish for his second goal of the night.

It marked his first goals of the season and a needed return to the scoresheet.

Malango’s performance highlighted the growing chemistry in Sacramento’s front line, where movement off the ball is beginning to open consistent opportunities.

Depth on Display

By the final stretch, the match had become a demonstration of Sacramento’s depth as much as its starting quality.

Memo Rodriguez made his return to action and immediately contributed, delivering a long ball that sparked the sequence leading to the fourth goal. Ryan Spaulding carried the play forward before finding Michel Benitez, who finished emphatically into the upper corner in the 81st minute.

The goal capped off a night where multiple contributors made an impact, reinforcing the idea that this squad is beginning to build layers beyond its core group.

Defensive Control and Clean Sheet

While the attack will draw attention, Sacramento’s defensive organization was equally important in securing the result.

Spokane generated moments, including a dangerous opportunity late in the first half, but Republic remained composed. Vitiello’s four saves ensured the clean sheet, while the back line limited sustained pressure and controlled second balls throughout the match.

It stands as the only shutout in Group 1 play so far and reflects a balanced performance across the field.

A Complete Performance

This was not just a win to open the tournament. It was a match where multiple questions began to find answers.

New signings made immediate impacts, returning players reintegrated seamlessly, and the attacking output matched the intent that has been building over recent weeks. The combinations looked sharper, the movement more intentional, and the finishing more decisive.

For a team still finding consistency across competitions, Saturday night offered a version of Sacramento Republic FC that feels closer to what it believes it can be.

Well, this was a week of absolute and complete chaos. We had a last minute winner, a few beat downs, a goal from over 60 yards out, and only one match with fewer than 2 goals scored. The wild, wild west is keeping it’s reputation this year. So who’s stock is up and who’s is down? Let’s take a look.

1: San Antonio FC (4-3-1) ⬆️4

Last match: 3-2 win at El Paso

Hey, a win over a rival is a win, even if they basically handed it to you on a silver platter. They scored a chip goal from deep in their own half (you’ll see that later) and were basically handed the ball in front of net in the final minute of the game to win it. Did they deserve the win? Absolutely not! Does that matter in the standings? Nope! Good teams find ways to make things happen… San Antonio is exceptional at just that.

2: Oakland Roots SC (3-3-1) ⬆️1

Last match: 1-1 draw vs Tulsa, 4-2 win vs Las Vegas

A two-game week for Oakland saw them pick up 4 points at home. After picking up a goal in the 4th minute against Tulsa, they went down a man just before half and then weathered a storm of *20* shots to secure a draw. Things turned around mid-week as they battered a bad Vegas defense to win 4-2, led by a hat-trick from Peter Wilson. The Roots are the real deal, folks.

3: Orange County SC (4-3-1) ⬇️1

Last match: 0-0 draw vs Lexington

If you sat through this match, you have our sympathies. A 0-0 draw with 5 total shots on target and 26 fouls isn’t a fun one. OC will be annoyed to have that weak of a showing against a Lexington team that’s now winless in 5.

4: El Paso Locomotive FC (4-1-1) ⬇️3

Last match: 3-2 loss vs San Antonio

This one stings. In the first Copa Tejas match up of the season, El Paso also took their first loss of the season, falling to San Antonio 3-2. What’s wild is the stats - El Paso had an xG 2.13 higher than San Antonio, had double the number of shots on target, and completely controlled the game. But a defensive miscue led to a last gasp allowed goal, and then there is… whatever this was:

It’s a game they’ll want to quickly forget - it’s also probably just a small bump in the road on their way to the top of the table.

5: Phoenix Rising FC (2-3-2) ⬆️2

Last match: 3-0 win at Miami

Phoenix traveled all the way out east to play in Miami and made the flight worth it with a 3-0 win that started early with a goal in the 8th minute. Miami peppered Phoenix with shots, but could only get 3 of the 16 attempts on target (and hit the woodwork twice). For a team trying to get their feet under them, this was a much needed 3 points.

6: New Mexico United (2-0-3) ➡️-

Last match: Bye

Another bye week for New Mexico means they have the fewest games played of any USL-C team. United has been very stop-and-go to start the season, and a lack of field time hasn’t helped - they’re going to have to deal with making up these games later in the season.

7: Sacramento Republic FC (2-4-1) ⬇️3

Last match: 1-1 draw at Brooklyn

A weird Tuesday night on a small Coney Island pitch in front of a roller coaster led to a late PK for the Quails, as they snagged a last minute penalty to equalize and take a point on the road. Republic recorded just 3 shots on target, all in the second half, and their control and pressure has regularly not been good enough to win games. They’ll need several missing starters to return from injury soon if they want to get back into the title chase.

8: FC Tulsa (1-3-2) ➡️-

Last match: 1-1 draw at Oakland

Before the match, Tulsa would have been happy with a 1-1 draw on the road in Oakland. After the match? That felt like a loss. They played the entire second half up a man due to an Oakland red card, and could only muster just the one goal on 15 second half shots. The finishing just has to be better for this team to earn any confidence.

9: Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (2-2-2) ⬆️2

Last match: 4-1 draw at Colorado

Well that was easy. One way to break a 3 game winless streak is to just... play Monterey Bay. The Switchbacks did what they needed to do, dominated Monterey, and picked up an easy 3 points at home. And talk about dominant; they had twice as many shots on target than the Union had shots total! Kohri Bennett taking the top slot in the Golden Boot race is a nice little bonus.

10: Lexington SC (1-3-3) ➡️-

Last match: 0-0 draw at Orange County

We said it above, and we’ll say it again here: If you sat through this match, you have our sympathies. A 0-0 draw with 5 total shots on target and 26 fouls isn’t fun. Lexington will be happy to take the point, but they’re now winless in 5 matches - a streak of matches where they've only managed to score twice. This is an expensive ship that is slowly filling with water.

11: Las Vegas Lights FC (1-2-4) ⬇️2

Last match: 4-2 loss at Oakland

Two things are true of every single Vegas game:

• 1, they will score goals.

• 2, they will allow goals.

The league’s worst defense allowed 4 goals on the night - and scored 2 of their own. The Lights are pure chaos and, like the city of Vegas itself, the chaos is the attraction. At a certain point, you’re not watching soccer - you’re on a ride.

12: Monterey Bay FC (0-2-5) ➡️-

Last match: 2-1 loss at Colorado Springs

The Union just can’t seem to stop the bleeding. They haven’t won a game yet, they’ve scored just 3 goals all season, and have just 2 points. They’ve won just 1 game in their last 15 matches going back to last season. Unfortunately, I think the Switchbacks put it best:

After another crazy week in the Western Conference, all teams will be taking a break from league play this coming weekend - to play in the USL Cup. Some of these match ups are just fun. Saturday morning we get our first New York Derby as the Cosmos (USL-1) host Brooklyn (USL-C). Later in the day, Hartford (USL-C) and Rhode Island (USL-C) continue their series of grudge matches, while Vegas (USL-C) hosts Boise’s (USL-1) first ever match against a Championship side.

And don’t forget - qualifying out of the group stage in this tournament is hard. Just a single loss can borderline eliminate a team from the competition entirely, so every team will be fighting for their lives every match. For us, we’ll be rooting for a few cupsets.

Republic FC left Maimonides Park with a point that felt earned through persistence rather than control alone, securing a 1-1 draw against Brooklyn FC with a penalty deep into stoppage time. The result extends the club’s unbeaten run on the road and reinforces a growing identity under Neill Collins, one built on resilience even when performances feel incomplete.

Control Without Reward

Sacramento settled into the match well and carried much of the play, finishing with 61.6% possession and an expected goals advantage of 1.61 to 0.71. Those numbers reflect a team that dictated tempo, progressed the ball effectively, and spent extended stretches in the attacking third.

Despite that control, Brooklyn struck first in the 27th minute. A loose ball at the top of the box fell to Markus Anderson, who finished cleanly into the bottom corner. It was a moment that cut against the overall run of play and forced Sacramento into a familiar position, chasing a match they had largely controlled.

Republic created chances before halftime, including a dangerous sequence from an Arturo Rodriguez corner that nearly found Lee Desmond in the six yard box, but the final touch never came. That inability to capitalize on early opportunities kept Brooklyn in the match and ultimately gave them something to protect.

Pressure Builds After the Break

The second half followed a predictable pattern. Sacramento pushed forward with more urgency, committing numbers into the attack and forcing Brooklyn deeper into their own half. Blake Willey forced a save early in the half, and the flow of the game increasingly tilted toward the visitors.

The underlying numbers reinforced what the eye test suggested. Sacramento recorded 28 touches inside Brooklyn’s box compared to just 9 for the hosts. The pressure was real, sustained, and at times overwhelming, but once again the final product lagged behind the build up.

Substitutions helped maintain that attacking intensity. Dominik Wanner and Kyle Edwards added fresh legs, while the eventual introduction of Jack Gurr provided a different type of impact entirely. Even then, the breakthrough remained elusive. A Benitez effort off a recycled play struck the crossbar in the 76th minute, and several dangerous balls flashed across goal without a decisive touch.

Gurr’s Return Shifts the Moment

Jack Gurr’s return was one of the most significant developments of the night. After missing the opening month of the season, the defender entered in the 60th minute and immediately changed the dynamic on the right side. His willingness to push forward, deliver crosses, and make late runs added a layer Sacramento had been missing.

That impact culminated in the final moments. As stoppage time stretched on, Freddy Kleemann played a ball forward that found Gurr making one last attacking run into the box. The sequence forced a defensive mistake, resulting in a foul and a penalty with effectively the last action of the match.

“The reason that he’s such a top player is because he makes those runs right at the very death and forces that play” Collins said following the match.

Gurr’s influence went beyond the single moment. His presence helped sustain pressure and gave Sacramento a direct option in wide areas, something that had been missing earlier in the match.

Benitez Delivers in the Moment

With the opportunity in front of him, Michel Benitez stepped up and converted the penalty in the 96th minute. It was a composed finish in a high pressure moment and another example of his growing importance to the squad.

Benitez was active throughout the match, leading Sacramento with three shots and contributing heavily in possession. His ability to impact the game in multiple phases was evident, but it was the late penalty that ultimately defined his night.

A Point That Reflects the Season

There is a balance to how this result should be viewed. Sacramento extended its unbeaten road run and showed the kind of determination that can define a season over time. At the same time, the match followed a pattern that has emerged repeatedly. Control, chances, and stretches of dominance are present, but they are not consistently translating into wins.

Collins acknowledged both sides of that reality.

“We wanted three points, but again, unbeaten on the road. It’s a positive point in the end.”

That tension will continue to shape how this team is evaluated. The foundation is clearly there, supported by strong underlying metrics and a group that does not fade late in matches. The next step is converting performances like this into full results rather than late recoveries.

Republic FC’s U.S. Open Cup run came to an end Tuesday night in one of the crueler ways a match can finish, as the Indomitable Club fell 9-8 in a marathon penalty shootout to Minnesota United after holding their MLS counterparts scoreless through 120 minutes.

It wasn’t a performance that felt like a loss in the traditional sense. Sacramento didn’t concede, didn’t look out of place, and for long stretches dictated the terms of how the match would be played. Instead, it became a night defined by margins, where one missed kick after nearly two hours of disciplined, organized soccer ultimately made the difference.

A Defensive Performance That Held Firm

From the opening phases, the match settled into a familiar rhythm. Minnesota United controlled possession and circulated the ball comfortably, finishing with over 65 percent of it, but Sacramento remained compact, patient, and difficult to break down.

While the Loons generated more attempts, outshooting Republic 16 to 9, the quality of those chances rarely forced panic.

At the center of it all was Danny Vitiello, who delivered a composed and commanding performance in goal. His five saves across regulation and extra time preserved the shutout, including a key stop late in the match that ensured Sacramento would have a chance to push the game to penalties.

In front of him, the defensive unit led by Lee Desmond, alongside Freddy Kleemann and Aaron Essel, managed the game effectively, forcing Minnesota into wider areas and limiting clean looks through the middle. His effort in the second half, which narrowly missed the target, stood out as one of Sacramento’s better chances, while a late sequence in extra time saw Arturo Rodriguez break through the defense and force a strong save from goalkeeper Alec Smir.

Even with just two shots on target, Sacramento’s opportunities were enough to suggest the match could have been decided before penalties. The difference, as it has been at times this season, came down to finishing in key moments.

Extra Time Pressure, but No Breakthrough

As the match wore on, Minnesota’s control began to translate into longer spells of pressure, particularly in the first period of extra time. Sacramento spent more time defending deeper, absorbing possession and relying on structure rather than pressing high.

Still, the match never felt out of reach. Brandon Cambridge came close to providing the decisive moment in the 102nd minute, creating space with a quick move inside the box before sending his shot just over the bar. It was the type of chance that could have defined the night, and for a brief moment, it looked like it might.

Instead, the match continued its steady march toward penalties, with neither side able to find the breakthrough.

A Shootout Decided by the Smallest Margin

The penalty shootout mirrored the match itself, with both teams showing composure and consistency from the spot. Round after round, each side converted, extending the shootout well beyond the standard five attempts.

Danny Vitiello stepped up again with two saves, giving Sacramento an opportunity to take control, but Minnesota continued to respond, matching each conversion and refusing to give ground.

After 12 rounds, it ultimately came down to a single miss. Minnesota converted their ninth penalty, while Sacramento’s final attempt was turned away, bringing an end to a shootout that felt as relentless as the match that preceded it.

The West is already starting to split into tiers, but not always in the ways anyone expected.

A few early contenders are beginning to separate themselves, some preseason favorites are wobbling, and several teams still feel one good result away from changing the entire conversation. With small sample sizes still shaping the narrative, every point matters and every overreaction feels just a little more justified.

Here’s where things stand after another chaotic week in the USL Championship Western Conference.

1: El Paso Locomotive FC (3-0-1) ⬆️1

Last match: 3-2 win vs Las Vegas

I mean, sure they’ll take the win at home, but they very much could have done without giving up 2 goals to a bad Vegas team. That being said, the 2 goals allowed were from uncharacteristically bad goalkeeping and defending, and the Locomotive haven’t lost a game yet this year. Things are going just fine.

2: Orange County SC (3-1-2) ⬆️1

Last match: 1-0 loss vs New Mexico, 2-0 win vs San Antonio

What a roller coaster. Leading up to this weekend, OC had scored exactly 1 goal in every single match - which was just enough to keep them undefeated. That slim margin finally faltered this weekend as they failed to score their expected goal and fell 1-0 to New Mexico. But fortunes turned midweek - they handed San Antonio their first loss of the season in a very convincing 2-0 win at home.

3: Sacramento Republic FC (2-1-2) ⬆️3

Last match: 2-0 win vs Phoenix

It was a strong start for the Quails, as they came out firing to put 2 goals up in 25 minutes. They then sat back and were under fire themselves for the final 45 minute - but held firm and got the win and the clean sheet. It’s a good pallet cleanser after the loss against El Paso, but there’s still a ways to go if they want to fight for the top of the table.

4: New Mexico United (2-2-0) ➡️

Last match: 1-0 win at Orange County

2 wins in 2 games for New Mexico sees them shooting up the league table - with 2 games in hand still over most of the opposition. Was the penalty a bit soft? Sure, but that hardly matters when you put up a clean sheet against a team that has scored in every match of the season. I’d call New Mexico "quietly optimistic”.

5: Oakland Roots SC (2-1-1) ➡️

Last match: Bye

A bye week is a good chance to reset for Oakland, who started hot but now have just 1 point in the last 2 matches. They now travel cross country to Tampa, where they’ll play a Rowdies team that’s been all but invincible.

6: San Antonio FC (3-1-2) ⬇️5

Last match: 0-0 draw at Monterey Bay, 2-0 loss at Orange County

Oof. That’s a rough week. A 0-0 draw at the worst team in the entire USL and then a 2-0 loss at Orange County makes for a very poor West Coast trip. They’ve now gone 300 minutes without scoring a goal - even though they remain at the top of the table, they need to get the goal scoring going or they are very quickly going to tumble.

7: FC Tulsa (1-1-2) ➡️

Last match: Bye

On a bye this week, Tulsa is now undefeated in 3 straight. A match up against OC who played midweek is a perfect opportunity to keep that going.

8: Colorado Springs Switchbacks (1-2-2) ⬆️3

Last match: 1-1 draw vs Lexington

They’ll take the draw at home, even if it came from a late PK that was a bit soft. That said, the Switchbacks were slightly the better team on the day and deserved a point. They’re in for a tough mid-table slog this year.

9: Lexington SC (1-2-2) ⬆️1

Last match: 1-1 draw at Colorado

On the road in Colorado, Lexington settled for yet another game without 3 points - this draw was their first road points of the year at all! They’ll count themselves unlucky to give up a soft PK, but surely you’d expect the biggest spender of the offseason to be averaging more than 1 goal scored a game.

10: Monterey Bay FC (0-3-2) ⬆️2

Last match: 0-0 draw vs San Antonio

It feels very weird to call a draw the “upset of the week”, but a Monterey team that entered the match with a single point just held the best team in the West to a 0-0 draw. It wasn’t pretty, Monterey hardly touched the ball, but their sit-back-and-counter strategy gave them a few solid chances and kept San Antonio from getting a single shot on target. It’s the rare nil-nil draw that feels like a win.

11: Las Vegas Lights FC (1-3-1) ⬇️3

Last match: 3-2 loss at El Paso

Well, you’ll certainly never be bored if you turn on a Lights game. In 5 matches, they’ve lost 3-2 *three times*. Vegas is very good at scoring goals - with 8 goals in 5 games. They are also very good at letting goals in - with 10 goals allowed in 5 games. If they can ever figure out this defense, they could have something here. Until then, they’ll at least continue to have some very entertaining games.

12: Phoenix Rising FC (0-3-2) ⬇️3

Last match: 2-0 loss at Sacramento

The search for a first win of the season was all but dead within the first 25 minutes of the match this week. Even still, there was some hope to head home with a draw - but several missed chances, including one point blank in front of the keeper, sent the Rising home without any points. It’s a long way up from down here.

If the opening stretch has proven anything, it’s that the West may be far less predictable than expected.

The margins remain thin, but patterns are starting to emerge: El Paso looks like the early standard, Sacramento may finally be finding its footing, and clubs like San Antonio and Phoenix are learning quickly that reputation means very little once the season settles in. With fixtures piling up and the table tightening, expect even more movement in the weeks ahead.

The Lineup:

Republic’s offense finally left the gate firing on all cylinders, as 2 first-half goals lead them to a 2-0 win over the winless Phoenix Rising. Phoenix, who had tied 3 straight before this week, struggled to contain the Republic offense in the first half and then couldn’t get their offense working in the second half—even with Republic all but giving them control of the game for the last 45 minutes. It’s a good win for Republic, even if it wasn’t the most convincing; I have some real concerns about that second-half performance. That being said, 3 points is 3 points, especially with the continued absence of several key players.

Still missing from the lineup due to injury is Gurr, Memo, Reedy, and Timmer, and we now add Spaulding to that illustrious list. This growing list of injuries is concerning, as Republic has yet to field what I would classify as a “full strength” squad. Also not starting was Malango, who had just played 60 minutes for the Malawi national team in Botswana on Tuesday, though he did come in later as a substitute. I can’t imagine the jet lag after that quick of a trip is particularly comfortable.

On the bright side, the “next man up” mentality is really working in Republic’s favor. In for the injured Spaulding and Gurr was Aaron Essel—who quietly had the best performance of the night of any player on the pitch with an 8.2 player rating. And starting in place of Malango and Memo were Dominik Wanner and Blake Willey respectively, who both scored. The first-half performance out of this group was the best we’ve seen Republic play on the year.

The Good:

First-Half Dominance
Before tonight, Republic hadn’t scored earlier than the 62nd minute in league play. Then, they showed up and scored 2 goals in the first 25 minutes. What was great to see was how dominantly they controlled the first half—despite only having 51% of the possession. They did this by largely confining Phoenix to their own half when they had the ball; while Rising had basically the same number of passes as Sacramento did, they coupled it with only 3 shots (none on target) to Republic’s 9 shots.

For this first half, Phoenix tried to get their offense going in by predominantly playing over the top, but Republic won 10/18 aerial duels and were successful on 78% of their tackles, largely negating Phoenix’s attempts. Republic also set the backline fairly high, catching Phoenix offside twice in the first half. They did all this by regularly switching to a back 3:

Republic here have just lost the ball on a turnover in Rising’s side of the pitch, and Rising have booted the ball upfield to their up-top outlet of Studenhofft… . But you can see that Republic, despite having 4 defenders, are actually holding 3 of them back —Desmond, Kleemann, and Essel. This, in turn, allows one of the 3 defenders back to step up when needed, which you can see Lee Desmond doing here, and allows Benítez to get forward up the pitch, where he grabbed himself an assist. Compare Benítez and Essel’s heat-maps:

Essel does get forward occasionally, but not as often or as far as Benítez, and Essel drops towards the middle right of the pitch more often than Benítez drops to the middle left. This largely shifts in the second half, where Republic start to give up more ground with a 2 goal lead, but the flexibility of the defense to allow Benítez to push forward really unlocks the offense.

Dominik Wanner and Blake Willey
Speaking of that unlocked offense, the player that is most unlocked by Benítez pushing forward is Dominik Wanner. Look how far his average positioning is compared to every other Republic player—he’s number #17:

He’s able to move so far forward because Benítez (#22) is pushing up the same side. Wanner was largely a fringe player after he was signed last season, and more than a few folks were disappointed with his production. In 2025, he had only 12 starts and had just 4 goal contributions (3 goals and an assist)—good for a goal contribution once every ~289 minutes. But just this week, he’s already matched 2025’s goal contribution total, with 2 goals and 2 assists. In total, he has 2 goals and 3 assists on the year, good for a contribution once every ~74.5 minutes. A significant portion of this is the formation change—Wanner was able to get up field last year with the 5-2-3, but the 4-2-3-1 of this season means that there are more numbers crashing the box, and more defensive stability behind him.

Blake Willey also showed up in a big way, and I couldn’t be happier for him. He became the 5th Republic academy prospect to score for the first team when he scored his first professional goal in just the 10th minute of the match. Doing it during a home match in his hometown makes it even sweeter. Blake really deserved a goal last season with how well he played, and he is really developing into a true box-to-box midfielder. Look at his heat map, he’s all over the place:

The goal he scored was interesting for a few reasons. First, it’s just a great finish, one timing it into the bottom right corner. And second, this is the first goal Republic have scored that played out in the way we thought they would score before the season started. I didn’t predict Forester Ajago to be the top goal scorer for a reason—because this is what I figured we would see:

Ajago is quick, strong, and really good with his feet, so he is really quick to get on the ball and get behind the opposition's lines. But by the time he does so, he’s drawing all of the attention, with 2 defenders crashing on him. What this does, though, is completely open up the player playing at the 9 (in this case, Willey) to make a late run into the box for a backwards pass. I think we’ll see more of this as the team starts to click more—Ajago is going to be the creator that sets up the goals, while occasionally snagging a few himself.

Defense bent, but didn’t break
The second half was a different story, one we’ll touch on below, but to their credit, the defense did not break. In the second half alone, they faced 11 shots and 6 corners. Only 3 those shots were on target—1 was blocked and the other 7 were off target. A big part of this was that Republic kept Phoenix largely out of their side of the pitch: despite Republic managing just 28% possession in the second half, Phoenix only had 31 final-third entries to Sacramento’s 29. And look at Phoenix’s shot map:

See that big grouping of shots from way outside of the box? All of them but one were during the second half. That speaks to Phoenix’s frustration with their inability to move into Republic’s box for better shots. The defense also stepped up when things did get dicey:

Danny steps out too early here, but he’s able to confidently do so because he knows he has defenders like Freddy Kleemann, who instantly runs to the goal and perfectly positions himself to block the shot off the line. Lee Desmond did a similar thing during the Open Cup match last week. It’s a bit nervy, but these are the moments that make the opposition wonder if they can do anything to get a goal—and it leads to Phoenix taking the long shots we discussed above.

The Bad:

Sitting Back a BIT too early…
Three points and a clean sheet aside, the second half was a bit… nervy. Republic sat back in defense way too early. In the second half, Phoenix took 72% of the possession, 11 shots to Republic’s 2, and 6 corner kicks to Republic’s 0. Republic sat back, sat deep, and struggled to not just break out, but hold on to the ball at all. A full 45 minutes of this is too much. Yes, it worked, but it doesn’t help that Phoenix wasn’t clinical. If Kleemann doesn’t make the goal line clearance we talked about above, this is an entirely different ball game. And when you sit back for that long, inevitably someone is going to miss their man mark:

How Charlie Dennis misses that is a question for the ages. This match could have very easily ended in a 2-2 draw. Collins tried to fix the lack of forward movement in the 72nd and 77th minutes as he brought on Malango, Edward, and Cambridge in to replace tired legs, but neither of the trio did much to change the game—they combined for just 22 touches total due to how late they came in.

I am glad that the defense held, but the second half should not have been as defensive as it ended up being.

The Linos…
Special shout out to the line judges tonight—it’s not often that they do a bad enough job that they make the center official look poor. There were several missed calls on who touched the ball last before it went out of play. One or 2 I can excuse at this level —3 or 4, most of which were seemingly obvious, is not a good performance.

But there is nothing worse than a misapplication of the Laws of the game. The broadcast was showing a commercial here (a tirade I will save for another day…) so the clip is cut a bit short at the beginning, but this was called offside:

However, this can’t be offside—it’s not a pass by an attacking player or a “save” from a defensive player! The Phoenix player is the one who deliberately kicks it out wide, and then a Republic player collects it. The International Football Association Board, or IFAB, literally have this exact situation as one of their questions under the Law:

“A defending player (Team A) challenges an attacking player (Team B) and deliberately kicks the ball (no foul is committed). After that, the ball goes directly to another Team B player who is in an offside position. What is the correct decision?

Answer: The referee allows play to continue. There is no offside offense if a player in an offside position receives the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball”

I can excuse officials at this level missing judgment calls—there’s no VAR, and the game moves fast. But to misapply the basic rules, especially one that is literally a question that IFAB clarifies, is inexcusable at this level. Someday, officiating in the United States may reach a decent level, but that requires a level of investment that few organizations seem to want to make.

What Stood Out:

With exception of maybe the Tulsa match, we still haven’t seen a full, cohesive, second-half match out of the Quails. While last week’s match was “As poor of a first half” as head coach Neill Collins had seen, he called this week’s first half “as good as we’ve been”—but neither match’s opposite half was particularly good. Phoenix is showing themselves to be a weak team as well, given they don’t yet have a win, so the falloff in the second half was a bit of a disappointment. Ideally, Republic would have gone for a third goal instead of sitting back. We’re still waiting for a “definitive” win that really shows that Republic can play a full 90 minutes of top class football. With several injuries to key players though, it could be that the club is just trying to ride things out until those players can return.

That being said, 3 points puts Republic right back up to third in the Western Conference. San Antonio and El Paso above them are the two scariest teams in the West for now, and Republic will need to perform significantly better against lower-tier teams if they want to match either of them. The next opportunity for that comes against Las Vegas on Saturday, in what will be an intriguing matchup. Sacramento USL-Cup hero Jared Mazzola is now in between the sticks in Vegas—and we all know what Jared can do. On top of that, Vegas is one of the top scoring teams in the entirety of USL, trailing only El Paso and Louisville, but they also have the second-worst defense in the entire league too. Matching that sort of team up against the low scoring but best defense team that Sacramento has historically been leaves a critical question: What happens when an unstoppable defense comes up against an unstoppable offense? We’ll find out this weekend.

There are certain rumors in sports that don’t feel new, even when they are. They carry a familiarity to them, not because they’ve already happened, because they follow a pattern people recognize.

The recent whispers connecting Sacramento to a potential MLS future via the Vancouver Whitecaps FC feel like that kind of story. Nothing has been confirmed. No official link exists. And yet, the idea lingers not as a wild theory, but as something that feels plausible.

It feels plausible because we’ve seen what happens when stadiums, ownership, and ambition stop aligning.

And we’ve seen what happens to the cities left behind.

The move that MLS never fully escaped

In 2005, MLS made a decision that still shapes how these conversations are viewed today. The San Jose Earthquakes were relocated, their competitive operation moved to Texas to become the Houston Dynamo. The reasoning was straightforward, stadium limitations, ownership instability, and long-term financial viability.

But what MLS understood, even then, was that moving a team is never just about the team.

It’s about the city.

The league attempted to soften the impact by preserving San Jose’s identity, its name, its history, its colors, with the intention of returning one day. It was a compromise, one designed to avoid the kind of permanent fracture that relocation can create.

Because history shows what happens when that fracture isn’t addressed.

When the Oakland Raiders left Oakland for Las Vegas, it wasn’t just a team moving cities—it was the removal of a cultural anchor. When the Oakland Athletics followed, it reinforced something deeper: that once a city begins to lose teams, it risks losing its identity as a sports market altogether.

MLS avoided that outcome in San Jose. The Earthquakes returned in 2008. The league kept both markets.

But the lesson remained clear.

Teams don’t just leave stadiums behind, they leave communities.

Columbus draws a line

More than a decade later, MLS faced a situation that looked familiar on paper but unfolded very differently in reality.

In 2017, ownership of the Columbus Crew explored relocating the club to Austin, citing the same issues MLS had faced before, stadium control, revenue limitations, long-term sustainability. But Columbus didn’t respond the way San Jose had.

It fought.

Fans organized. The movement spread. “Save The Crew” became a national rallying cry, not just for Columbus supporters but for soccer fans across the country who saw the situation as a defining moment for the league.

What followed wasn’t just protest, it was escalation. Legal action. Political involvement. A challenge to the idea that teams could be moved without consequence.

The outcome reflected a league adapting in real time. Columbus stayed. Austin received an expansion club. MLS avoided removing one market to create another.

It was a turning point.

After Columbus, relocation in MLS wasn’t just difficult it became reputationally dangerous.

Sacramento’s unfinished story

Sacramento exists in a different space, one shaped not by relocation but by absence.

When MLS awarded Sacramento a franchise in 2019, it felt like the natural conclusion of years of momentum. The Sacramento Republic FC had built one of the strongest fanbases in lower-division soccer, consistently filling Heart Health Park and establishing itself as a model for expansion.

Then, in 2021, it disappeared.

The lead investor, Ron Burkle, stepped away. Sacramento was left with something different than losing a team. It was left with the expectation of one that never arrived. That kind of loss carries a different weight. Not something taken away, but something promised that never fully materialized.

But instead of fading, the city recalibrated.

New ownership. A renewed stadium plan. And eventually, a decision that shifted the tone entirely: a 20,000-seat venue, built from day one, without phased expansion.

Publicly, the message remained simple that the stadium is for Sacramento, for the fans, regardless of league.

But the subtext never disappeared.

Vancouver and the problem MLS always circles back to

While Sacramento has been building toward something, Vancouver has been trying to hold onto what it already has.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC are facing the same issue that has defined nearly every relocation conversation in MLS history: they do not control their stadium. Their lease at BC Place is widely viewed as restrictive, limiting revenue potential and operational flexibility in a league that increasingly prioritizes both.

The situation has moved beyond quiet concern. Commissioner Don Garber has described the lease as “untenable.” Ownership has explored a sale. Public officials have acknowledged the possibility that a buyer could relocate the team if a long-term solution is not found.

And yet, on the field, Vancouver has done everything right. A run to MLS Cup in 2025, led by Thomas Müller, should have been a stabilizing moment. Instead, it highlighted the disconnect between performance and structure.

Because in MLS, structure wins.

And when structure fails, history suggests something eventually gives.

Where the stories begin to overlap

This is where the rumor begins to feel less like speculation and more like alignment.

Sacramento’s positioning has not been passive. Ownership has referenced MLS repeatedly, often without prompting, weaving it into the narrative without making it the headline. At the stadium groundbreaking, MLS wasn’t explicitly centered but it was present, implied, just beneath the surface.

At the same time, the club has remained notably silent on alternatives.

When the United Soccer League announced USL Premier, a Division One league set to launch in 2028, Sacramento did not engage publicly. For a club already at the top of the USL structure, it would have been a natural next step or at least a talking point.

Instead, nothing. That absence feels intentional. Then comes the timing.

As Vancouver’s instability becomes public—ownership uncertainty, a lease nearing expiration, relocation entering the conversation. Sacramento announces its shift to a fully built 20,000-seat stadium. The same day, the mayor references an MLS opportunity being “on the horizon.”

Individually, each moment makes sense. Together, they feel coordinated.

And history suggests that when those pieces begin to align, outcomes tend to follow.

What happens if it becomes real

If Vancouver were ever moved to Sacramento, the reaction would not be limited to those two cities.

In Vancouver, it would be immediate and emotional, shaped by the knowledge that these situations rarely come out of nowhere. The warning signs have been public. The risk has been acknowledged. The fight would likely mirror Columbus, not necessarily in legal structure, but in intensity and visibility.

Because relocation, once it becomes real, doesn’t feel like a business decision.

It feels like something being taken.

That reality has played out far beyond MLS. When Wimbledon F.C. were relocated and transformed into the Milton Keynes Dons, it created one of the most divisive moments in modern soccer. Fans didn’t just protest they rejected the new club entirely, forming a new one in protest, rebuilding from the bottom of the pyramid.

The lesson wasn’t subtle. In soccer, clubs are not just assets. They are identity.

The ending MLS likely wants to avoid

If MLS has learned anything from its past, and from the broader sports world, it is that relocation carries consequences that extend far beyond a single transaction.

The league has spent years shaping a narrative that it grows with its markets, not at their expense. San Jose returned. Columbus stayed. In both cases, MLS avoided becoming defined by what it took away.

A Vancouver-to-Sacramento move would challenge that directly.

Which is why the most likely path forward, if MLS is trying to avoid repeating its most controversial chapters, is one that allows both markets to exist even if that existence looks different.

There is a version of this story where Vancouver continues outside MLS, potentially within the Canadian Premier League, preserving professional soccer in the market even if the league changes. It would not replicate MLS in scale, but it would maintain continuity, something history shows matters more than leagues often account for.

Because once a city loses a team, it rarely just loses one.

Oakland is living that reality now, and soccer has seen what happens when fans feel a club has been taken from them.

A familiar story, even if unconfirmed

None of this confirms anything.

There has been no announcement, no formal connection between Vancouver and Sacramento, no indication from MLS that such a move is imminent.

But when viewed together, MLS’s history, Sacramento’s positioning, Vancouver’s uncertainty, and the broader consequences of relocation across sports, it begins to resemble something familiar.

A pattern.

A story that has played out before, in different forms, with different endings.

And it leads to a question that feels just as important as anything the league might decide, would Sacramento fans accept taking a team from another city?

On the surface, the answer feels obvious. No. Not after Columbus. Not after seeing what relocation does to a fanbase, to a city, to something people feel they belong to. Sacramento has built its identity the right way, through support, through patience, through proving it deserves a place at the highest level.

But reality is rarely that simple.

Because if it does happen, if MLS returns in a way that finally fulfills what was promised years ago the question changes. It shifts from principle to presence. From what should happen to what already has.

History suggests that once a team is there, it becomes harder to separate how it arrived from what it becomes.

Oakland didn’t choose to lose its teams but other cities embraced gaining them.

Milton Keynes didn’t ask to inherit Wimbledon but the club still exists today, even as the debate around it never fully disappears.

Sacramento would likely face that same tension. The excitement of arrival. The discomfort of origin. Both existing at the same time.

And while all of this remains rooted in rumor, speculation, and the league’s past actions, the shape of it is hard to ignore.

Because in sports, these moments rarely arrive without warning.

They build. Quietly. Deliberately.

Until suddenly, they’re no longer rumors at all.

Sacramento Republic FC didn’t just beat Phoenix Rising on Saturday night. They answered a question.

After a stretch of matches where performances and results haven’t always aligned, Republic put together a 90-minute showing that finally matched the underlying promise. A 2-0 win at Heart Health Park, built on a dominant first half and disciplined second, felt less like a moment and more like a statement.

“I think tonight was as good as we’ve been… I thought we were fantastic,” head coach Neill Collins said postmatch.

For a team still searching for consistency, this was the closest thing to a complete identity we’ve seen all season.

Fast start, no hesitation

There was no feeling-out period in this one. Sacramento came out aggressive, direct, and intentional, pressing high and forcing Phoenix into uncomfortable spaces immediately.

That pressure paid off inside ten minutes.

Forster Ajago, continuing to show his ability to stretch defenses, beat his man on the outside and delivered a composed cutback into the box. Blake Willey met it in stride and finished cleanly, a calm strike that carried a little extra weight.

First professional goal. At home. In front of family. In a match that mattered.

It was a moment years in the making, not just for Willey but for a club that continues to quietly build one of the more consistent local development pipelines in the league.

And Sacramento wasn’t done.

In the 24th minute, Michel Benítez stepped into a passing lane near midfield and turned defense into attack in one motion. His through ball split the line and found Dominik Wanner, who finished through contact to double the lead.

Two goals, both created from pressure and intent. Not luck. Not moments of chaos. Repeatable actions.

Wanner, now up to four goal contributions on the week, continues to look like a player growing into exactly what this system needs.

“We wanted to be aggressive directly from the first minute… I think at the end, it’s well deserved,” Wanner said.

Control doesn’t always look like possession

On paper, Phoenix had more of the ball. They finished with just over 60% possession and outshot Sacramento 14 to 11.

But this wasn’t a match where possession told the story.

Sacramento controlled the game through structure. Their defensive shape limited clear looks, forced Phoenix wide, and turned potentially dangerous moments into manageable ones. Even when Phoenix found space, the final action rarely matched the buildup.

The best example came early in the second half.

Ihsan Sacko found himself in a promising position near goal, but Danny Vitiello read it early, closed down the angle, and forced a low-percentage cross. Seconds later, Freddy Kleemann stepped in with a goal-saving header, cutting out a shot that looked destined for the net.

That sequence didn’t show up as a highlight moment, but it defined the night.

Organized. Connected. A team that understood exactly what was required.

Vitiello and the difference between pressure and danger

Phoenix pushed in the second half. They had spells where they controlled territory, won corners, and forced Sacramento deeper than they would have liked.

But there’s a difference between pressure and danger, and Sacramento made sure it stayed that way.

Vitiello’s performance was a major part of that. His presence in goal settled everything in front of him, and when called upon, he delivered.

His 67th-minute punch through traffic stood out, a moment that could have easily turned into chaos but instead ended cleanly.

By the final whistle, he had secured his 60th regular season clean sheet, continuing to build on a record that already puts him among the league’s all-time best.

And maybe more importantly, this was the kind of match where the clean sheet felt earned by the entire group, not just preserved by the goalkeeper.

The difference was execution

Statistically, the match was tight. Expected goals were nearly identical at 0.80 for Sacramento and 0.85 for Phoenix.

But Sacramento did what they haven’t always done this season.

They finished early chances. They managed the game. They stayed organized late.

“I thought it was a strong team performance… pressing hard, strong defensively… just a good team win,” Willey said.

It’s simple, but it hasn’t always been consistent.

What it means

This wasn’t just three points.

This was the version of Republic FC that has been hinted at but rarely sustained. The version that presses with purpose, transitions quickly, and defends as a unit without losing composure.

The version that doesn’t need to dominate the ball to dominate the match.

There will be tougher tests ahead. There always are. But if this performance becomes the baseline instead of the exception, the conversation around this team changes quickly.

Because for one night at least, Sacramento didn’t look like a team searching for answers. They looked like a team that had found them.

Week 4 is complete, and the separation is starting to show.

San Antonio has taken control at the top, El Paso continues to look like one of the most complete teams in the conference, and a few early risers are beginning to fall back to earth. At the same time, teams near the bottom are finally picking up results—making this table feel tighter than it actually is.

We’re still early, but patterns are forming. Some teams know exactly who they are. Others… are still figuring it out.

Let’s take a look.

1: San Antonio FC (3-0-1) ⬆️5

Last match: 2-0 win vs Lexington

San Antonio looks like the most complete team in the West right now. Even rotating the squad, they handled a strong Lexington side comfortably. One goal allowed in four matches tells you everything you need to know. This is a team that knows exactly how it wants to play—and executes it.

2: El Paso Locomotive FC (2-0-1) ➡️

Last match: 2-1 win at Sacramento

Down a man for over 30 minutes? Didn’t matter. El Paso went up two early, absorbed pressure, and shut the game down. They’ve got one of the best attacks in the West and a defense to match. Right now, they’re the biggest threat to San Antonio.

3: Orange County SC (2-0-2) ⬆️7

Last match: 1-0 win at Oakland

Still not convincing—but still getting results. Orange County has now strung together wins without ever really dominating a match. One goal continues to be enough. It’s not pretty, but it’s effective—and it has them climbing fast.

4: New Mexico United (1-2-0) ⬆️4

Last match: 3-2 win vs Colorado Springs

Finally, three points—and in dramatic fashion. Conceding a penalty in stoppage time only to score the winner moments later is about as chaotic as it gets. There’s still plenty to clean up, but this is the kind of result that can shift momentum.

5: Oakland Roots SC (2-1-1) ⬇️4

Last match: 1-0 loss vs Orange County

Sometimes you lose games you shouldn’t. Oakland probably deserved more here, but couldn’t find the goal—and paid for it. After last week’s collapse and now this, there are starting to be questions about their ability to close out matches.

6: Sacramento Republic FC (1-1-2) ⬇️3

Last match: 2-1 loss vs El Paso

A frustrating night. Two soft goals conceded, little urgency for most of the match, and only a late push when it was already too late. Now winless in three, and the performances aren’t trending in the right direction.

7: FC Tulsa (1-1-2) ➡️

Last match: 1-1 draw vs Phoenix

This feels like two points dropped. Tulsa created enough to win, had goals called back, and controlled large portions of the match. Instead, they settle for a draw—and that’s becoming a theme.

8: Las Vegas Lights FC (1-2-1) ⬆️3

Last match: 1-0 win vs Monterey Bay

Vegas finally gets their first win of the season, though it should’ve been more with 7 shots on target and two penalties. The attack isn’t the issue, the defense is. A clean sheet is nice, but it comes against a struggling Monterey side.

9: Phoenix Rising FC (0-1-3) ➡️

Last match: 1-1 draw at Tulsa

Another draw, another match where Phoenix shows flashes but can’t quite put it together. They found a way to get a point on the road, but defensive issues continue to hold them back.

10: Lexington SC (1-2-1) ⬇️5

Last match: 2-0 loss at San Antonio

A tough reality check. Lexington couldn’t find a way through San Antonio despite getting into dangerous areas. The structure is there—but the final product is missing right now.

11: Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (1-2-1) ⬇️7

Last match: 3-2 loss at New Mexico

This one hurts. Thought they had a point, only to lose it with the final kick of the match. Colorado continues to generate chances, but results aren’t following—and that’s starting to add up.

12: Monterey Bay FC (0-3-1) ➡️

Last match: 1-0 loss at Las Vegas

One goal on the season. A missed early penalty. And no real signs of progress. Right now, this looks like the weakest side in the West—and it’s not particularly close.

Closing

Five weeks in, and the gap is starting to form.

San Antonio and El Paso look like real contenders. Orange County keeps finding ways. And teams like Sacramento and Oakland are starting to feel the pressure of slipping results.

At the bottom, wins are finally coming but not always convincingly.

The West isn’t settled yet but it’s starting to take shape.

On a rainy night in Clovis, Republic FC handled business exactly how a higher-division side should. A 4-0 win over Valley 559 FC sends the Quails into the Round of 32 of the U.S. Open Cup, but more importantly, it showed the kind of control and depth this group is capable of when everything clicks.

From the opening minutes, Republic FC dictated the tempo. They pressed high, moved the ball cleanly, and forced Valley into long stretches without meaningful possession. It didn’t take long for that pressure to turn into something tangible.

The breakthrough came in the 11th minute off a corner. After the initial delivery wasn’t cleared cleanly, Dominik Wanner recycled the ball back into the box where captain Lee Desmond rose to meet it, powering home the opener. It was a deserved lead, and one that never felt in danger the rest of the night.

Republic doubled the advantage in the 36th minute through one of the cleaner sequences of the match. Eleven passes carved through Valley’s shape, switching fields and pulling defenders out of position. Wanner finished the move he helped start, driving forward and placing a left-footed strike into the net.

Three minutes later, the match was effectively over.

Making his debut, Brandon Cambridge provided an immediate impact, slicing through the right side before picking out Kyle Edwards at the near post. Edwards made no mistake, finishing clinically to give Republic a 3-0 lead heading into halftime. The gap in quality was clear, but the execution matched it.

While Desmond opened the scoring, his biggest moment may have come on the other end. With Republic already in control, Valley nearly pulled one back in the first half, only for Desmond to produce a goal-line clearance that preserved the clean sheet. Tracking back to the line, he got just enough on the ball to keep it out, crashing into the post in the process.

The second half followed a similar script. Republic controlled possession, limited any real threat, and continued to rotate players through. The fourth goal came in the 64th minute, sparked by a pair of substitutes. Freddy Kleeman’s first touch initiated the move, Forster Ajago linked play forward, and Wanner once again found Edwards in stride. The forward buried his second of the night, capping off a complete attacking performance.

Edwards’ brace will grab headlines, but Wanner quietly dictated much of the match with a goal and two assists, consistently finding space and creating problems between lines. Desmond’s opening goal set the tone, and his goal-line clearance in the first half ensured the clean sheet remained intact.

Beyond the scoreline, the night carried added significance for the club’s depth and development pipeline. Brandon Cambridge, Sergio Rivas, and academy products Jackson Montero and Luke Strassburg all made their first team debuts. Montero and Strassburg became the 18th and 19th academy players to appear for the first team, continuing to reinforce Republic’s local pathway.

To close the match, a group featuring four players aged 20 or younger saw out the clean sheet without issue. For a tournament that often demands squad rotation, Republic not only advanced but gained meaningful minutes across the roster.

Statistically, the match reflected the control on display. Republic finished with 13 shots to Valley’s 10, but more telling was the quality of chances and the sustained possession throughout both halves. Valley was limited to just three shots on target, rarely testing Danny Vitiello in any sustained way.

This result also continues a remarkable trend. In all 11 of their U.S. Open Cup appearances, Republic FC has now reached at least the Third Round. It’s a level of consistency that reflects both the club’s approach to the tournament and its overall standard.

Now, the competition takes a significant step up.

Republic FC will host Minnesota United FC in the Round of 32. Should they advance, the path becomes even more intriguing. A matchup with Phoenix Rising FC would bring another home match to Sacramento, while a win for San Jose Earthquakes would send the Quails on the road for a Northern California clash.

The Lineup:

For the first 55 minutes of the match, the Quails looked like they had been punched in the mouth. Then El Paso received a red card… and Republic acted like they were still reeling until the 90+2’. It was a fiery ending, but by the time they got things together, it was far too little and far too late.

It was made worse by Neill Collins having only a few substitute options. On the roster side of things, Republic is still struggling. We have confirmation that Memo Rodríguez, Jack Gurr, and Rohan Chivukula are out injured—and Pierre Reedy hasn’t seen the field or bench yet this season. He was seen sitting with Gurr in the stands this week, so I think we can add him to the injury list here. Additionally, Mayele Malango was out on international duty. This Republic roster is not deep, leading to a bench that contained 5 players under the age of 20. And while Chibi and Willey have both seen considerable playing time, the other 3 teenagers have yet to make their professional debuts.

Collins only real attacking substitute option was Kyle Edwards, who entered the game in the 64’. Outside of giving a teenager a debut, he also only realistically had Essel, Willey, and Chibi—and none of the 3 are attacking players. Due to all the absences, Casas and Wanner received their first starts in league play, in place of Memo and Malango respectively.

Now, Republic has taken steps to alleviate this. On Monday, they announced the signings of Brandon Cambridge and Sergio Rivas to 25-day contracts. It’s currently unknown if these signings will turn into long-term deals or not; if Republic expect players back from injury soon, these may just be temporary band-aids, but if not, they’ll likely be joining long term.

None of this is to excuse the play on the field, of course. It more just explains why Collins didn’t sub out the players that couldn’t match the pace of the match. Before we rip this performance completely apart, let’s check out what few good things we can pull from this performance…

The Good:

A few individual performances
Despite the outcome, a few players did have notably good performances. Benítez in particular performed well; his 8.1 match rating was the highest on the field of both teams. He had 85% pass rate, had 3 passes that directly led to a teammate’s shot (a “key pass”), and created 1 of Republic’s 5 big chances. He also had 4 accurate crosses in 5 attempts, 2 clearances, and went 3 for 4 on duels. He absolutely deserved to be the one to take the penalty, which he slotted away for just his second goal as a Quail.

Spaulding also had himself a decent game, getting himself a key pass, a big chance created, and missing an incredible goal by literally an inch. Seriously, if this ball is just an inch more inside, it’s a goal:

It doesn’t get any closer than that. Two other decent performances were from Casas and Kaye, both who had player ratings of 7.0 mostly because of their dribbling and passing.

Last Gasp Chances
Say what you will about the rest of the match (and oh boy will we get into that below…), but the boys threw the kitchen sink at El Paso for the final 7 minutes of the match. In those final 7 minutes, they scored a penalty, completely controlled the ball, had 5 shots, and hit the post in the final seconds. The only player who didn’t get forward was Danny Vitiello—though it did appear that he wanted to but was waved back by the coaching staff. There is plenty of criticisms to be had of Republic’s relaxed approach for most of the match, but at least they showed they wanted it at the end.

What Could Have Been…
As bad as things were, Republic still could have won this match. Spaulding and Kaye both hit the post—Republic certainly had their chances. If either or both of those shots go in, this becomes a very different article. That being said, they didn’t… so let’s get into what went wrong.

The Bad:

Slow Starts
Republic have started every single match, with the exception of this week’s Open Cup match, extremely slowly. How slow? Well, let’s look at some numbers in USL-C play:

• Earliest Goal: 62’ (vs. Monterey Bay)

• In the first half of matches:
  13 shots, 4 on target. 0 goals. 2 goals allowed Shooting accuracy: 30.7%

• In the second half of matches:
  27 shots, 10 on target. 4 goals. 1 goal allowed. Shooting accuracy: 37.0%

So over twice as productive offensively in the second half of games than the first, and that 0 first-half goals is particularly glaring. The offense is just slow. We’ll address the lack of urgency below, but if you watch the last few minutes of the first half, Republic are just… passing the ball around. I don’t understand it—they’re already down 2 goals, and rather than getting the ball forward before the referee can end the half, they pass the ball backwards and out of a threatening position, allowing the half to come to a close.

That’s not to mention the two goals they allowed. The first seemed lazy; not only was the El Paso player free in space in Republic’s box, but the shot trickled in agonizingly slowly and certainly could have been better dealt with by either one of the defenders or Vitiello. The PK, you could argue, was a pretty soft—but it also comes from lazy defending, where Republic were too slow to react:

The El Paso player finds the space between Kaye and Kleemann, both of which seem to pass the player off to each other. Kaye ends up chasing the player down, but there is no reason to foul here. There are only 2 El Paso players in the box and they’re both pretty solidly covered:

If anything, Kleemann should step up to help here, and Kaye should have stepped in front of the player instead of trying to win the ball from behind while in the box. It’s just too sloppy.

A Complete Lack of Urgency
Even more alarming than the slow start was the complete lack of urgency displayed by the players on the pitch. Republic has been able to overcome slow starts in the past—that becomes hugely problematic when they stay slow through the second half. It becomes baffling when they stay slow despite being down 2 goals and up a man.

The most significant showing of this was the 37 minutes after El Paso received their red card. Down to 10 men and up a goal, El Paso sat back, content to let Republic control the game. In this situation, you would expect Republic to drive forward, consistently shoot, and try to grab 2 goals. Instead, from the 55th minute, when El Paso went down to 10 men, to the 90+2 minute, when Republic won a penalty, Republic recorded just 3 total shots.

Not shots on goal. Three shots total. Just one of those was on target. The attack was slow, lackadaisical, and unintentional. If you had hidden the score bug, one would assume Republic was winning 2-0 and closing out the game, not losing 2-0. This period of play is simply unacceptable. Now, there is an argument that scoring against 10 men is actually more difficult—they put all 10 guys behind the ball, leaving little room for the attacking team to operate. But I don’t buy that excuse. The final 7 minutes of the match showed that Republic were able to drive forward, create chances, and shoot on target. The real question for the club is where was that earlier? Why was that pressure not applied for the entire second half while down by 2?

Collins commented on the second half specifically:

“We missed chances early in the second half, and I think then we had a little lull. I think we lacked some quality, some times on the ball, which meant we weren’t able to progress the ball as quickly as we should have been. But it comes down to the intensity, but I don’t think we played with quality, we looked like a good team, but at times, the breakdown in possession was just very disappointing.”

It’s an interesting comment—but 37 minutes with 3 total shots while up a man is not a “little lull.” It is nearly an entire half of sitting on your hands and doing nothing of note to win the game. He also mentions the intensity, and I mentioned earlier Collins’ limited subs, but where is the driving force that is willing to step up and fire the team up? In past years, Roro would be that force on the field: on Saturday, no one took up that mantle.

Corners. Corners. Corners.
This may become a permanent section of the tactical article if things continue. Republic have now had 36 corners this season, and exactly 0 have resulted in a goal. I spent a night going over every single Republic game of 2025, and I finally found the last corner goal that Republic scored: May 17th of 2025, when Trevor Amann scored the 5th goal of a 5-0 drubbing of Las Vegas in the Open Cup. The only other corner goal of 2025 was a Ryan Spaulding goal the week prior to that when Republic beat Vegas (again!) 4-0.

In 2025, Republic took 155 corners total. With 2 goals scored, that’s a conversion rate of just 1.3%. If you add in the 36 corners taken so far this year, their conversion rate since 2025 is just ~1%. Ok, ok, that sounds rough, but where does that compare to the average team? While benchmarks vary across leagues and levels, the widely accepted average sits around 3-4% of corners resulting in goals. By that measure, Republic is converting corners at less than half the typical rate, and none of their corners so far this year have inspired any confidence to buck this trend. That’s an extra 3-4 goals a year that they are missing out on just by being below average—enough to turn a few games from losses to draws or draws to wins. It’s valuable points being left on the table.

But hey, maybe we only score corners against Vegas? If so, mark your calendars for April 11th, when Republic plays in Vegas—maybe we’ll finally see one.

What Stood Out:

It was not a good performance from the Quails. Collins went so far to call it:

He’s not wrong, but what is going to change as a result of it? A midweek Open Cup win of 4-0 is certainly a start, but it’s not quite the same beating an amateur team. Republic also desperately need someone on the pitch to step up and get mad when the energy isn’t there. Collins can shout obscenities from the sidelines, as he usually does, but it’s not the same as a player on the field taking responsibility and getting the team going.

I think there are a few guys who could step into that role. Kaye and Desmond are the team’s natural leaders, but Crisostomo, Artuto, and Benítez have also shown that they could step up and be that for this club. Best case scenario, this match was a slap in the face that wakes the team up, and they roll out angry on Saturday against a Phoenix team that hasn’t won a game this year. Worst case scenario, this is what we can expect from the club. Only time will tell.

For the first time in the 2026 season, Sacramento Republic FC walked off the pitch without a point. A sluggish first half and missed chances late proved decisive in a 2-1 loss to El Paso Locomotive FC at Heart Health Park.

The result tells a familiar story, but the way it unfolded may be more frustrating than anything else.

A first half that cost everything

Sacramento didn’t come out flat, but they never fully took control. Early flashes, including a deflected Arturo Rodriguez effort in the 17th minute, hinted at danger, but it was El Paso who struck first.

In the 25th minute, Amando Moreno slipped behind the defense and finished past Danny Vitiello to open the scoring. Twelve minutes later, Alex Mendez doubled the lead from the penalty spot, putting Sacramento in a 2-0 hole before halftime.

Head coach Neill Collins didn’t sugarcoat it.

“We lost the game in the first half… we lacked the intensity we need, the quality we need and we got brutally punished for it. It was not an acceptable first half.”

Despite creating moments, including Ryan Spaulding rattling the post just before the break, Sacramento entered halftime chasing the match.

Control without the finish

The second half looked entirely different.

Sacramento dominated possession, finishing with over 61% on the night and generating 17 shots to El Paso’s 8. More importantly, the pressure told. El Paso was reduced to 10 men in the 55th minute after Eric Calvillo picked up a second yellow, opening the door for a comeback.

From that point forward, it was one-way traffic.

Republic FC pushed numbers forward, controlled territory, and created wave after wave of chances. The expected goals tell the same story, with Sacramento generating 2.49 xG compared to El Paso’s 1.16.

But for all the control, the finishing never matched the urgency.

Chaos, chances, and what could have been

The breakthrough finally came deep into stoppage time.

Mark-Anthony Kaye was brought down in the box, and Michel Benitez stepped up to convert, cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the 92nd minute. From there, the match turned into pure chaos.

Sacramento threw everything forward. Five shots on target in stoppage time. Multiple scrambles in the box. A final sequence that saw three attempts in quick succession, only for the ball to crash off the post.

It never came.

The bigger picture

This wasn’t a match where Sacramento was outplayed. It was one where they were punished early and wasteful late.

The numbers support it. More possession. More shots. More chances inside the box.

But games aren’t won on control alone.

Collins pointed to it clearly. The second half showed what this team can be. The first half showed how quickly matches in this league can get away.

And in a Western Conference where margins are thin, that difference is everything.

Sacramento now turns its attention to the U.S. Open Cup, but the lesson from this one is simple: you don’t get 45 minutes to figure it out.

Not in this league. Not against teams like El Paso.

Week 3 is in the books, and the chaos is already setting in.

No more perfect teams. Late goals are swinging matches across the conference. And if the first two weeks felt volatile, this week made it clear that nobody is safe—leads aren’t safe, performances aren’t consistent, and even the “top” teams are showing cracks.

San Antonio takes over the top spot, Lexington keeps climbing, and a few early-season favorites are already starting to slide. Three weeks in, the West is wide open.

So, who’s actually good, and who’s just surviving? Let’s take a look.

1: San Antonio FC (2-1-0) ⬆️5

Last match: 1-0 win vs New Mexico

San Antonio finally paired their defensive identity with an attacking performance to match. 20 shots, 9 on target, and if not for New Mexico’s keeper standing on his head with 8 saves, this could have been a blowout. It still took a late winner, but this looked like a complete team for the first time this season.

2: Lexington SC (1-1-1) ⬆️3

Last match: 3-0 win vs Brooklyn

Lexington keeps quietly putting together results. They haven’t blown anyone away, but they’re organized, disciplined, and picking up points. In a conference where consistency already feels rare, that alone is enough to push them near the top.

3: El Paso Locomotive FC (1-1-0) ⬇️1

Last match: Bye

Nothing changes for El Paso this week, they just get jumped. That’s the reality this early in the season. They still have one of the more complete performances we’ve seen so far, but they’ll need to respond next week to avoid slipping further.

4: Oakland Roots SC (2-0-1) ⬇️3

Last match: 2-2 draw at Phoenix

Oakland controlled this match early and should have put it away. Instead, they collapsed late and conceded twice in the final minutes to turn three points into one. That’s the kind of result that sticks with you, especially when you had the game firmly in hand.

5: Orange County SC (1-2-0) ⬆️5

Last match: 1-0 win vs Colorado Springs

Was it pretty? Not really. But after two rough results, Orange County finally found a way, thanks in part to a 16-year-old stepping up late. They didn’t look like the better team, but they were more clinical and defended well enough. Progress, even if it’s messy.

6: Sacramento Republic FC (1-2-0) ⬇️3

Last match: 1-1 draw vs Monterey Bay

This one felt familiar, in a bad way. Sacramento controlled large stretches, got into good areas, took the lead… and then let it slip late. A saved 90th-minute penalty kept it from being worse, but these are the exact types of matches that cost points over a season.

7: FC Tulsa (1-1-1) ➡️

Last match: 3-2 win vs Las Vegas

Tulsa finally found goals and needed all three of them. They let Vegas control possession for most of the match but were clinical when it mattered. It’s a strange performance: effective, but not entirely convincing.

Phoenix looked dead in the first half. Then they flipped the match completely. 64% possession after the break, 9 shots, 6 on target, and two late goals to steal a point. If they can play like that for 90 minutes, they’re dangerous. If not… this is who they are.

9: Monterey Bay FC (0-1-2) ⬆️3

Last match: 1-1 draw at Sacramento

No shots on target in the first half. Still found a way to get a result. Monterey defended well, made the right adjustments, and kept pushing until they got their moment late. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective and that’s something.

10: Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (1-1-1) ⬇️6

Last match: 1-0 loss at Orange County

This might be the most confusing team in the West right now. They generate chances, lots of them, but half their shots are off target, and defensively they’re leaking goals. They’ve lived by their attack so far… and this week, it caught up to them.

11: Las Vegas Lights FC (0-1-2) ➡️

Last match: 3-2 loss at Tulsa

At this point, you know exactly what you’re getting. Goals? Yes. Defense? Absolutely not. Vegas has firepower, but they also lead the league in goals conceded. Every game is chaos and usually, it doesn’t go their way.

12: New Mexico United (0-0-2) ⬇️4

Last match: 1-0 loss at San Antonio

Still no points, and honestly, they’re fortunate it’s only been narrow losses. This could have been much worse if not for another standout performance from their keeper. Right now, they’re hanging around in games… but not doing enough to change them.

Week 4 feels like the first real separation point of the season.

There are no easy matches this weekend, just a series of games that will start to define who belongs at the top and who’s just been hanging around. San Antonio vs Lexington is the headliner with real early-season implications, but there’s pressure everywhere. Sacramento gets a measuring stick match against El Paso, Oakland has to respond after letting one slip, and New Mexico is still searching for its first points.

Even Vegas and Monterey, two teams still trying to figure themselves out, feel like they’re playing a game that could shape their trajectory.

Three weeks in, the table is tight. Another week like this, and it might not be.

Old Trafford, San Siro, The Maracana, Camp Nou,… Scott’s MiracleGro Field?

Forgiving the badly played out intro, while none will be as legendary as the first few grounds named, and as the game of soccer continues to grow in the United States, teams and communities are creating stadiums to host clubs, concerts, and other events. With yesterday’s exciting announcement regarding our beloved team’s ambitious new home design, I thought we would take a look at how it compares to other soccer specific stadiums.

New Republic Stadium Basics

• 20K seats for soccer, and 27K for concerts and other events

• 1,500 safe standing supporter section

• More than 3,000 square feet of retail space for a dedicated team store

• Full-roof canopy for shade

• A dynamic concourse experience with local offerings
  

  

Comparing Stadium Between Leagues

Maybe the least surprising sentence in this whole development, MLS has more soccer specific’s for a stadium than USL. Try to hold in your shock. Currently, in the USL, there are six other than Republic’s current home at Heart Health Park. Louisville’s Lynn Family Stadium is largest of the group, holding more than 15,000 fans on game days. Rhode Island FC’s new home is absolutely lovely, and should be seen as a one of the league’s crown jewels.

Republic’s stadium would dwarf all current options in the USL should the team make the jump to USL Premier in 2028, but, with the expansion, everyone’s favorite three-letter soccer league is back on the menu. There has been, and will continue to be more discussions on what league they play in, but for the sake of this article, let’s assume Republic make the move to MLS. The new stadium dimensions would make it larger than six MLS clubs, including San Jose and Minnesota. They would have the same amount of seats as DC United’s Audi Field but on a larger plot of land.

More important than stadium size is what many hope it symbolizes further. City and Team officials have been quoted calling the New Republic Stadium (NRS) as an anchor to further Wilton Rancheria’s ambitions in the area, and the centerpiece of a larger development full of housing, retail, entertainment, restaurants, and transit.

What will separate NRS from other stadiums will be the fan atmosphere. Columbus, Nashville, and Cincinnati all have new stadiums that MLS hang their hat on, but Providence Park in Portland is consistently revered as one of the best because of atmosphere the Timber’s Army brings to game days, well before the gates open, and well after those gates are closed.

The Lineup:

Ouch. Despite being the more dominant team for the vast majority of the match, Republic came away with just one point and was lucky to even get that; former Republic player Nick Ross’s chance to grab all 3 points from the penalty spot late was denied by Danny Vitiello. It’s important to realize that Republic also played 120 minutes just 3 days prior in the Open Cup and most starters saw significant minutes. Tired legs were almost certainly a factor in the late-game breakdown.

The Starting XI saw only one change from what we saw in the first two league
games—and that was Blake Willey stepping in for Memo Rodríguez. As usual, the club has been tight-lipped about Memo being out; the broadcast mentioned he was injured, but gave no indication to the severity or a timeline for return. There was no indication he was even hurt until the Starting XI was released. Speaking of injuries, also out again was Jack Gurr, who has yet to make his 2026 debut—though a few folks on Reddit did mention seeing him in the stands.

Injury concerns aside, it was fun to see Willey take on that 9 role in the offense and the entire formation played as advertised. But what did we see that stood out?

The Good:

Ajago Stays Hot
A 3-goal week for Forster Ajago is exactly what you want to see from your starting striker, as Ajago scored twice against El Farolito and once against Monterey Bay. He’s now averaging a goal every 92.3 minutes—that would be an elite pace if he could keep that up throughout the season. This goal against Monterey is special because he both creates it and finishes it:

He both wins the header and the foot race while staying onside, before cleanly slotting the shot through the keeper’s legs. There is a brief moment in there where his touch gets away from him, but he stays composed and gets the goal. Just this week, he’s scored half the goals he did in 20 appearances for Lexington last season. And we’d be remiss not to mention Arturo’s one-touch assist, what a great pass.

Still Undefeated
Republic remains 1 of 9 teams in USL without a defeat. In 4 games (3 in league play) they have 5 goals, only 1 goal allowed, and a combined expected goals (xG) of 4.6 while their xG against is only 3.05. This is a very good start to the year, especially after kicking off against 2 tough teams, Tulsa and Lexington. I have high hopes going forward, especially because Republic don’t play any truly “elite” teams for the next few weeks, giving them time to work out any issues.

Dominant Stats
Republic genuinely dominated this game. Sure, the xG was 0.81 to 1.38… but that includes the PK. From open play, it was 0.81 to 0.52. Republic averaged 56.8% possession and still haven’t had less than 50% of the ball this season. They also won 52% of ground duels and 64% of aerial duels. Obviously the final score matters more, but it is good to know that Republic played and controlled the game, they just didn’t finish it.

Danny Vitiello
Arguably the point Republic did get belongs to Danny Vitiello. The USL’s best every goalkeeper is now 8 for 15 on penalty saves in his career. I can’t express how absurd that is—elite keepers usually hover around 30-40%. So I’ll just leave this beauty of a save here:

The Bad:

Slow Starts
Republic have struggled to get the offense going in the first half of any game this season. Of the 5 goals Republic have scored, none of them have been scored in the first half. Even looking at when they’re shooting, they have 9 total first half shots through the first 3 league games… and 16 total second half shots. In fact, they only have 2 shots *on target* in the first half of all 4 games! To say they’ve been a second-half team is an understatement. It’s still early, but getting the offense going earlier in games is going to be crucial down the stretch.

Sloppy Defense
Republic’s first allowed goal of the season was a really sloppy one. Look, goals against happen. Sometimes you miss a mark on a corner, or an opposing striker makes a good hit, or you get caught out transitioning. It happens. What sucks about this goal is that it was far too easy. Watch the Monterey Bay player (Leggett) who gets the first head on the ball—and goes on to score:

He just runs straight up the middle and everyone just kind of… let’s him go? Let’s pause right after he heads the ball. Kleemann (circled) is taking care of the opposing player the ball goes to—that’s where he is supposed to be. But this came off a goal kick, so the other center back, Lee Desmond (squared), gets caught out a little too far up the pitch. Someone has to step into the center to block, or at least slow down, the opposing attacker:

But no one steps into that space quickly enough. So you’re left with this:

And Leggett is just off to the races. No one even gets a touch on him. It’s only the first goal allowed of the season, 3 days after the squad played 120+ minutes, so I don’t want to harp on it too much. But damn is it annoying for the first goal allowed of the year to be such an easy one.

Bad Subs
This game wasn’t helped that the substitutions were late and less than ideal. Yes, yes tired legs, long term fitness, etc, are all factors, but Republic conceded just 4 minutes after subbing Wanner and Chibi on. Immediately after the goal, Collins subbed in Edwards in hopes to get the winning goal—but with only 5 minutes left, Edwards managed just one touch of the ball. The only substitution that had any sort of significant play time was Pep Casas, who came in in the 69th minute but was all but absent from the game for 21 minutes—he had just 5 touches, was 2/4 on passes, had 0 shots, and had no defensive contributions.

As a whole, the subs averaged a 6.4 player rating and it’s hard to fault them for it. They just didn’t get enough time to actually get into the match, and all 4 of them started Wednesday. Add in the 2 known injuries Republic has to starters and midweek matches and things can get dicey; it could be Republic needs to find some depth as the season goes on.

What Stood Out:

A point is a point, but dropping 2 points to easily one of the worst teams in the league at home stings quite a bit. While Republic is averaging only 0.25 goals against per game so far, the goals against are going to happen over the course of the season —and Republic needs to figure out how to score early and often enough to offset those. It doesn’t help that Republic played 120 minutes in a fiery contest with El Farolito in the Open Cup midweek, a game where every single player except Crisostomo played a not-insignificant number of minutes. Starters Lee Desmond, Freddy Kleemann, Blake Willey, and Danny Vitiello not only played all 120 minutes Wednesday but also played at least 70 minutes in this match.

Even still, it’s 2 points dropped to a poor Monterey team and drops Republic to 3rd in the West, just off the pace of Oakland and San Antonio. Neill Collins’ post-game comments showed some disappointment:

“...when they scored, I think we looked very tired at that point. Understandable, to play 120 minutes the third week into the season. But… there’s no excuse. I thought we did more than enough to win the game in probably the first 75- 80 minutes, but the last five minutes. We could have lost it… it feels like two points dropped.”

Republic re-takes the field Saturday at home against El Paso—a team that beat Monterey in Week 2 by a score of 3-0 and who are now also coming off a bye week. This is going to be a tricky test for Republic; El Paso were vulnerable to set pieces in their first match, but Sacramento hasn’t scored off a corner since 2024 and have struggled on set pieces for years. They may need their first corner goal in over a year to break the deadlock.

Wilton Rancheria, the majority owner of Republic FC, has officially expanded plans for the club’s future home in the Downtown Railyards. What was once approved as a 12,000-seat stadium with the option to expand has now become a fully realized 20,000-seat venue from the start. The new design eliminates the phased approach entirely and replaces it with a statement project that positions the stadium as the centerpiece of the district.

The decision reflects what many who supported the club have believed for years. Sacramento was never a small-market soccer city. It simply lacked the infrastructure to match its support.

The privately financed stadium, projected to cost approximately $350 million, is expected to open in time for the 2028 season. During construction, Republic FC will continue to play its home matches at Heart Health Park.

Building for Demand, Not Possibility

From the start, the 12,000-seat concept felt like a compromise. It acknowledged the club’s current reality while leaving room to grow into something larger. This new plan flips that thinking entirely.

Republic FC hasn’t just drawn well, it has outgrown its home. Despite not having a roof, Heart Health Park’s 11,569 capacity has often felt like a ceiling, with demand pushing beyond what the venue can hold at times.

It has not come easy. Fans have packed into metal bleachers in the middle of Sacramento summers, showing up week after week anyway. This is not just about tickets. It is about a fanbase that shows up, travels, and treats this club like something bigger than the league it plays in.

Ownership is no longer waiting to see if Sacramento can support a larger stage. They are acting on the belief that it already does.

“For years, we have known what our fans deserve and what this region is capable of supporting. The response to groundbreaking removed any remaining doubt. A 20,000-seat Republic Stadium with a roof over every seat, safe standing for our supporters and world-class amenities throughout is not an overreach. It is exactly the venue Sacramento has earned.” said Kevin Nagle, Republic FC Managing Partner.

The design itself reflects that confidence. Plans include a full canopy covering every seat, a bowl-style layout that brings fans closer to the pitch, a dedicated supporters plaza, and expanded premium seating options. The structure is expected to rise 123 feet, making it one of the most visible and defining elements of Sacramento.

More Than a Stadium, A Catalyst for the City

The Downtown Railyards, a 244-acre site long viewed as one of the largest undeveloped urban infill areas in the country, has sat largely dormant for decades. Plans surrounding the stadium now include housing, hospitality, entertainment, and a major Kaiser Permanente medical center, all contributing to a broader transformation of the city’s core.

This stadium is not being dropped into an existing neighborhood, rather, it is helping create one.

Wilton Rancheria’s role in that transformation is significant. Since opening Sky River Casino and acquiring majority ownership of Republic FC, the tribe has positioned itself as a major developer in the region. This project represents a continuation of that trajectory, moving beyond traditional revenue models and into long-term, community-driven investment.

The stadium anchors a 31-acre development within the Railyards, with infrastructure work expected to begin in April. Streets, utilities, and foundational work will set the stage for construction, marking a visible shift from planning to execution.

Unlike many stadium projects across the country, this one will not rely on public funding for construction. Instead, increased property value and tax revenue generated by the surrounding district will support infrastructure improvements, aligning the project’s success with the city’s broader economic growth.

The MLS Question That Never Fully Goes Away

A stadium of this size inevitably brings another conversation back into focus.

Major League Soccer.

Sacramento’s previous MLS bid remains one of the most well-known near-misses in recent league history. The market, ownership momentum, and fan support were all in place before the deal ultimately collapsed. Since then, the question has lingered, not if Sacramento is viable, but when or if the opportunity returns.

A 20,000-seat soccer-specific stadium changes that conversation again.

It places Republic FC’s future home in line with, and in some cases ahead of, existing MLS venues. It signals long-term stability, investment, and intent. Even if MLS is not the stated goal today, the infrastructure being built aligns with what a top-flight club requires.

Publicly, ownership continues to center the project around Sacramento itself, not external validation.

Wilton Rancheria COO, Chris Franklin, said “The stadium’s not about MLS today. It’s about this region and it’s about Sac Republic.”

That framing matters. But so does the reality. Markets do not build projects like this without understanding what they could eventually support.

A Moment That Feels Different

For Republic FC, this is more than just another stadium update.

It is the moment where years of stalled progress, shifting plans, and unanswered questions finally give way to something tangible. Not a concept. Not a phased promise. A fully committed vision with a clear timeline.

The club that built its identity on atmosphere and support will soon have a venue that matches it. The city that has waited for the Railyards to come to life is now seeing the foundation of that transformation take shape.

And for supporters, there is something equally important in all of this.

A sense that this time, it is actually happening. And even then, some will probably still say they will believe it when they are standing inside it, as if that moment is not already on its way.
